A. Morris “Mo” Tooker is The Hartford’s announced choice to succeed Christopher Swift as CEO. The company says the change is scheduled to take effect March 1, 2027; until then, the appointments remain planned rather than completed.
When will Mo Tooker become CEO of The Hartford?
The Hartford announced on September 30, 2026, that its board had named Tooker as Swift’s successor. The CEO transition is scheduled for March 1, 2027. Tooker is scheduled to join the company’s board on October 1, 2026. The Hartford’s succession announcement describes the plan; the effective date is in the future as of this article’s publication.
What will Christopher Swift do after stepping down as CEO?
On March 1, 2027, Swift is scheduled to become executive chair. The Hartford says he will lead the board, help guide and oversee corporate strategy, and advise the CEO during the transition. Swift intends to step down from the executive-chair role in the second half of 2027. These are the company’s announced plans, not confirmation that the future changes have already occurred.
Who is Mo Tooker?
Tooker joined The Hartford in 2015 as chief underwriting officer and later took on roles with broader responsibility. He became company president on February 1, 2025. In that role, he added Personal Lines to his oversight of Small Commercial, Middle and Large Commercial, Global Specialty, Enterprise Sales & Distribution, and Risk Services. The Hartford said the appointment placed all of its property-and-casualty businesses under his leadership. The company’s January 2025 appointment release details that remit.

The Hartford’s official leadership biography says Tooker has more than three decades of insurance and reinsurance experience. Before joining the company, he was president of General Reinsurance Corporation and spent 12 years working internationally from the United Kingdom. He holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and environmental studies from Middlebury College.
Why did The Hartford select Tooker?
The company points to Tooker’s experience leading its businesses and strategy as president, along with his underwriting background. In its succession announcement, The Hartford credited him with advancing underwriting capabilities, broadening risk appetite, growing risk-mitigation services, and coordinating a company-wide go-to-market approach. Those are the company’s assessments of his record, rather than independently verified measures of performance.
Tooker’s presidency began in February 2025, giving him responsibility for the company’s property-and-casualty operations before the CEO transition was announced. The Hartford has not identified competing candidates in its succession announcement.
What did The Hartford say about Swift’s tenure?
The Hartford described Swift’s time as CEO as nearly 13 years, including more than 12 years as chairman, and said he led a transformation toward a more focused and disciplined insurer. In the September 30, 2026 announcement, the company said net income ROE had more than tripled and its share price had increased more than eightfold during his tenure. These are company-reported comparisons in that announcement, not independent evaluations.
