MLB’s Wild Card Series is a best-of-three playoff round: the No. 3 seed faces No. 6, and No. 4 faces No. 5 in each league. The higher seed hosts every game. Win two games to advance; lose and your season is over. The top two division winners skip the round and go straight to the Division Series.

How many teams make the Wild Card Series?

MLB’s 12-team postseason field is split evenly: six teams in the American League and six in the National League. Each league’s six spots go to its three division champions and three Wild Card teams. Division champions occupy seeds 1 through 3, ranked by record; the Wild Cards take seeds 4 through 6, also ranked by record. A Wild Card team with a better record than a division winner does not leapfrog that division champion in the seeding.

The top two division champions receive byes to the Division Series. The third division champion enters the Wild Card Series alongside the three Wild Card qualifiers. See MLB’s 2026 format FAQ for the league’s format explanation.

What are the matchups and best-of-three rules?

Matchup Who hosts? What the winner faces next
No. 3 vs. No. 6 No. 3 seed hosts every game No. 2 seed
No. 4 vs. No. 5 No. 4 seed hosts every game No. 1 seed

Best-of-three means the first team to win two games takes the series. A sweep ends it in two games; if the teams split the first two, a third game decides who advances. The lower seed does not host a game. MLB schedules the round within a three-day window so teams with byes do not have to wait longer than necessary.

Does the Wild Card Game still exist?

The former one-game Wild Card matchup is no longer the current format. MLB’s 12-team structure, adopted in 2022, uses best-of-three Wild Card Series instead. In 2012, MLB introduced a second Wild Card team per league and paired the two Wild Cards in a single-game playoff. The 2020 expanded postseason used a best-of-three series; the one-game round returned in 2021, before the best-of-three format returned in 2022. MLB first added a Wild Card team in each league in 1995. Its postseason history page outlines those format changes.

What happens after the Wild Card Series?

The bracket stays fixed; MLB does not reseed teams based on their regular-season records or Wild Card results. The No. 3/No. 6 winner plays the No. 2 seed, while the No. 4/No. 5 winner plays the No. 1 seed in the best-of-five Division Series. Division Series winners advance to a best-of-seven League Championship Series. The two league champions then meet in the best-of-seven World Series. Wild Card losers are eliminated.

How are regular-season ties decided?

MLB no longer schedules a Game 163 to resolve ties that affect playoff qualification or seeding. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record. Later criteria include records within the division and league; the complete sequence depends on how many teams are tied and which places or seeds are in question. The rules are described in MLB’s tiebreaker explanation.

Which rules differ in the postseason?

According to MLB’s 2026 format FAQ, the automatic runner placed on second base at the start of extra innings in regular-season games is not used in postseason games. Managers begin each postseason game with two replay challenges. MLB’s Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System, which debuted in 2026, follows its regular-season rules in the postseason.
