MIT’s latest “concrete battery” is better described as a carbon-cement supercapacitor: a load-bearing material that can also store electricity. MIT reported in 2025 that an improved version could store more than 2 kilowatt-hours per cubic meter, and estimated that about 5 cubic meters could meet an average home’s daily energy needs. That is a projection from prototype performance—not a demonstration of a house powered by concrete.
What MIT’s concrete battery actually is
MIT’s electron-conducting carbon concrete, called EC3 (“e-c-cubed”), combines cement-based structural material with electrochemical energy storage. It is not a conventional battery that stores energy through the same chemistry as a lithium-ion cell. Its storage architecture is a supercapacitor, which holds charge using conductive surfaces and an electrolyte.
The distinction matters: “concrete battery” is an accessible shorthand, but it can suggest a finished building product or a drop-in replacement for a home battery. The demonstrated work is a material and prototype system that could, if developed further, let part of a building or other structure serve both as a load-bearing element and as distributed energy storage.
How EC3 stores electricity
The material combines cement, water, very fine carbon black, and an electrolyte. Carbon black particles form a connected nanoscale conductive network through the cement matrix. The electrolyte enables charge storage within that network, creating the supercapacitor function while the cement-based composite retains a structural role.

In the 2025 work, the team added electrolyte directly to the mixing water. That differs from relying on a post-curing soak, which had limited how thick electrodes could be. The researchers reported their strongest performance with organic electrolytes, including quaternary ammonium salts dissolved in acetonitrile. Seawater was discussed as a possible electrolyte for coastal or marine structures, but that possibility should not be mistaken for a seawater-based building installation that has already been demonstrated.
What changed in the 2025 breakthrough
The 2025 PNAS paper, “High energy density carbon–cement supercapacitors for architectural energy storage,” reports improvements through nanoscale imaging, electrolyte optimization, thicker electrodes, and stacking multiple cells. MIT says optimized electrolytes and manufacturing increased storage capacity about tenfold over the earlier version.

| Measure | Earlier formulation | 2025 improved EC3 |
|---|---|---|
| Material volume MIT estimated could meet an average home’s daily energy needs | About 45 m3 (MIT, 2025 estimate) | About 5 m3 (MIT, 2025 estimate) |
| Reported storage per cubic meter | Not stated (MIT, 2025) | Over 2 kWh/m3 (MIT, 2025) |
The home-energy figures are estimates based on prototype performance, not measurements from a completed house or field installation. MIT also compared the reported storage of the organic-electrolyte version to roughly enough energy to run a refrigerator for a day; actual refrigerator consumption varies by model and use.

No completed self-powered building is established by the cited MIT and PNAS work. The paper reports laboratory components and small demonstrations: stacked EC3 components powered a 12-volt computer fan and charged a 5-volt video-game console through USB. Those prototypes show that the material can deliver usable electrical output in a stacked system, but they do not show a house running from an EC3 foundation or wall.

- The working principle of the circuit is that when a single cell/capacitor voltage is higher than the equalization voltage, the circuit internally discharges the battery/capacitor by turning on the triode, and the excess power is dissipated by the power resistor. Circuit equalization voltage accuracy is plus or minus 1%.
- Connect from the negative pole of the battery pack. The first line labeled "-" on the protection board is connected to the negative pole of the first battery, and the second line is connected to the second battery of the first battery compartment. On the chip, in turn, it is connected to the positive pole of the entire battery pack.
MIT’s home-energy estimate indicates why the concept attracts attention: structural concrete occupies substantial volume, so a future design might use space already required for slabs, walls, domes, vaults, parking areas, or roads as part of an energy-storage system. The cited MIT and PNAS work does not establish how an actual house would be wired, how much storage would be available after structural design constraints, or how it would work alongside solar panels, the grid, inverters, and household loads.
Why use energy-storing concrete instead of a separate battery?
EC3’s potential advantage is multifunctionality, not higher energy density than dedicated batteries. Conventional batteries provide greater energy density. The argument for energy-storing concrete is that, in an appropriate future design, the same material volume could carry structural loads and store some energy, potentially reducing the need for separate battery enclosures. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on performance, cost, design, and approvals that have not been established by the cited sources.

- Structural role: EC3 is designed to combine load-bearing concrete with storage; a conventional battery is a separate storage device.
- Storage density: MIT reports over 2 kWh/m3 for the 2025 organic-electrolyte version. The cited sources do not provide a complete apples-to-apples energy-density comparison with a specified lithium-ion battery or conventional supercapacitor.
- Cycle life, durability, safety, cost, lifecycle impacts, and code readiness: the cited sources do not settle these questions for building-scale EC3.
- Integration: a future EC3 structure could be designed around renewable generation, but the sources do not establish a complete building energy system or its installation requirements.
What buildings and infrastructure might use it?
MIT researchers discuss off-grid homes, renewable-energy storage, and roads or parking spaces that could charge electric vehicles as future applications. The broader concept is to integrate storage into concrete that is already needed for infrastructure, rather than add a dedicated battery room or enclosure. These are development targets, not products or proven deployment formats.

MIT announced a five-year sponsored research agreement with Aizawa Concrete in May 2024. Its EC3 Hub is investigating multifunctional infrastructure, including energy-storing concrete and electrically conductive pavement. The agreement shows an industry research partnership; it does not establish consumer availability, commercial licensing terms, or a date when EC3 will be sold for buildings.

A promising laboratory material is not yet a construction specification. The cited work does not resolve the practical questions needed by homeowners, engineers, builders, or infrastructure owners:

- How building codes, engineering standards, and permitting would treat structural concrete that also functions as an electrical storage system.
- How full-scale performance and lifecycle impacts compare with established storage options under real operating conditions.
Admir Masic, MIT associate professor and EC3 Hub co-director, has framed the goal as “multifunctional concrete,” arguing that a widely used construction material could offer additional functions such as energy storage. That is the rationale behind the research; the 2025 result is a notable improvement in prototype capability, not evidence that concrete can yet replace a home battery.
