If your Minisforum MS-01 boots Windows 11 but not Proxmox, the key is to identify where Proxmox fails: the installer may not start, installation may fail, UEFI may not launch an installed system, or Proxmox may be running with only its network connection broken. Windows booting does not confirm that the Proxmox USB, target drive, or UEFI boot entry works. Note the exact screen or error before changing firmware settings or disks.
First identify where the boot process stops
Use a display and keyboard to observe the machine, and record the exact message and stage. “Won’t boot” can describe several different problems, and each calls for a different check.
- The USB installer does not start: the machine never reaches the Proxmox installer menu.
- The installer starts, then errors: note the full error and whether the installer can see the intended SSD.
- Installation completes, but Proxmox does not start after reboot: check which drive and UEFI entry the firmware selects.
- A bootloader or kernel message appears: record it exactly; it may point to a boot-entry or installation issue.
- The system appears to start, but you cannot connect: investigate networking before treating it as a boot failure.
For useful troubleshooting, also note the Proxmox VE release, BIOS version, MS-01 CPU variant, Secure Boot state, target SSD slot, and whether other NVMe drives are installed. The available reports do not establish those details for your machine, so they cannot identify one universal fix.
If the Proxmox installer will not start or reports an error
Recheck the installer media and boot selection
- Confirm that the USB contains the intended Proxmox VE installer image.
- Recreate the installer on a known-good USB drive using a reliable image-writing method.
- Restart and select the USB device from the firmware’s one-time boot menu.
- If the installer starts but fails, photograph or transcribe the complete error and note whether the target SSD is detected.
Do not assume that Secure Boot, the USB writer, or the SSD is at fault based only on Windows 11 booting. In an Oct. 26, 2024 Proxmox forum report, an owner of an i5 12th-generation MS-01 described “problems with filesystem (error on HD0)” during a PVE 8.2 installation. The report says Secure Boot was disabled, another USB drive was tried, and both dd and Rufus were used; Windows 11 installed successfully and firmware 1.26 was installed. The excerpt does not confirm a resolution, so this case is a reason to capture the exact error—not proof of a particular cause.

If installation completes but the firmware will not start Proxmox
Check the selected drive and UEFI boot entry
Open the firmware boot list and verify that it points to the drive where Proxmox was installed and to the Proxmox entry, if one is shown. A successful installation does not guarantee that firmware retained or selected the correct entry.
Proxmox’s administration guide explains that some UEFI firmware can lose a Proxmox boot option, including when its entry points to a GRUB installation on a disk that firmware does not itself list as a boot option. Where the guide for your installed PVE version applies, check that the disk is listed as a firmware boot option and follow its instructions for running proxmox-boot-tool again. Use the guide corresponding to your release.

Isolate extra NVMe drives carefully
Multiple drives can make it less obvious which disk contains the boot files or which entry firmware is using. If practical, temporarily disconnect nonessential drives to test with only the intended installation drive. Back up important data first; do not wipe, repartition, or reinstall on a disk until you have verified what it contains.
A Dec. 18, 2025 PVE 9 forum report describes a “you need to load the kernel first” error on an MS-01 with multiple NVMe drives and Secure Boot enabled. The user later reported successful reboots after wiping a second SSD and reinstalling. That is one owner’s report, not a confirmed general fix; it does not establish that wiping a second drive is necessary or safe for another setup.

Do not change Secure Boot blindly
Proxmox’s administration guide warns that changing an existing installation to Secure Boot can leave it unbootable if the bootloader setup is not handled correctly. Check the guide for your installed PVE version and the actual bootloader configuration before changing Secure Boot. Avoid treating either enabling or disabling it as a universal solution.
If Proxmox starts but you cannot reach the host
A running host with an unreachable network is different from a machine that fails to boot. MINISFORUM’s MS-01 support guidance notes that installing a PCIe add-in card can change network-interface enumeration. Connect a display and keyboard to check the current interface names and link status:

ip addr showto list the interfaces. - Check the candidate interface’s physical link with
ethtool <interface_name>, replacing the placeholder with the actual interface name. - If the interface name differs from the one assigned to the bridge, update the physical interface used by
vmbr0in/etc/network/interfaces.
Use the interface name shown on your system; do not copy an assumed name from another MS-01 setup.
What the available MS-01 reports do—and do not—show
A September 2024 Proxmox community thread includes successful MS-01 installations and anecdotal stability discussions. It does not establish a particular CPU generation, memory capacity, microcode update, or BIOS version as the cause of this boot symptom. Treat other owners’ configurations as context, not a diagnosis; the exact failure stage and error on your machine are more useful.
