For a first homelab, choose a mini PC if your priority is learning virtualization, running containers, and experimenting with self-hosted services. Choose a NAS if your main need is shared household storage across multiple disks, with storage-management features built in. Neither is the universal winner: the right first device depends on whether compute or storage is the job you need it to do.

Mini PC or NAS: which should you buy first?

Start with the workload that prompted the purchase. A mini PC is generally the more flexible starting point for a beginner who wants to run services and learn how systems fit together. A NAS is the more direct choice when the problem is keeping files available to multiple devices and managing several drives.

Some devices bridge the categories, and a NAS can run applications or virtual machines. But a hybrid still has limits set by its processor, memory, drive layout, and software. The labels alone do not tell you whether a particular model suits your plan.

How the two options compare

What matters Mini PC NAS
Best fit Compute-led services, containers, virtualization, and experimentation. Shared storage and management of multiple disks.
Drive layout Often constrained by internal drive slots; verify the specific model. Multi-bay models can hold several drives; some support hot swapping.
Software flexibility Can offer broad OS and virtualization choices, depending on hardware. Capabilities depend on the appliance OS and model; some systems support apps, containers, and VMs.
Storage protection Depends on attached drives and the software configuration. May offer layouts such as mirrors or parity, depending on the system.
Compute headroom Depends on CPU, RAM, expansion, and cooling. Storage-first hardware may run apps and VMs, but capacity is model-specific.
Power use Measure the exact device under the workload you expect. Include the populated NAS, disks, and any network cards in the measurement.

There is no controlled mini-PC-versus-NAS power comparison established here. To estimate electricity cost, measure wall power during your actual workload and apply your local electricity tariff and expected operating hours.

Choose a mini PC when learning and compute come first

A mini PC is a strong fit for a beginner whose homelab goal is to try different operating systems, host small services, or learn virtualization without buying a storage appliance first. Before purchasing, check the CPU, memory capacity, network connections, expansion options, and cooling against the software you intend to run. Do not infer how many demanding virtual machines it can handle from the “mini PC” label.

One example of a hybrid device is the Beelink ME Pro configuration reviewed by TechRadar: Intel N95, 12 GB RAM, a 128 GB SSD, two 3.5-inch hard-drive bays, and three M.2 slots. The review describes tests with Windows and TrueNAS installations, file sharing, and Plex streaming, while noting that the N95 is limited for demanding general-purpose computing. That is one review configuration, not a guarantee about other mini PCs or hybrids. TechRadar’s Beelink ME Pro review was published March 3, 2026.

Choose a NAS when multi-disk storage comes first

If your first priority is shared household storage, multiple drives, and storage-management tools, a multi-bay NAS is the more direct starting point. Check how many bays the exact model provides, which disk sizes and types it supports, how drives are handled, and what backup and recovery options its software offers.

For scale, the January 2026 TrueNAS Mini manufacturer sheet lists the Mini X+ with 5+2 bays and up to 110 TB maximum raw capacity, and the 12-bay Mini R with up to 264 TB maximum raw capacity. Those are specifications for these named products, not capacity expectations for NAS devices in general. The sheet also lists ZFS stripe, mirror, and single-, double-, or triple-parity layouts, along with features including snapshots and remote replication. Plan storage protection and backup separately

Drive redundancy and backup address different risks. A mirror or parity layout can help maintain access to data after certain drive failures, but it is not a separate backup copy. Keep another copy of important files, such as on an external USB drive used for backup or through an appropriate remote backup workflow. The TrueNAS hardware guide allows USB hard drives for basic backup but advises against USB disks as primary TrueNAS storage; its guidance describes manual replication and off-site safekeeping for that backup use.

For a TrueNAS/ZFS pool, check the exact drive model and recording technology before buying. TrueNAS says desktop SATA drives are not designed or warrantied for continuous operation or RAID groups, and its hardware guide advises against SMR disks with TrueNAS/ZFS because slower rewrite performance can create instability or data-loss risks during resilver operations. Ask the drive manufacturer whether the specific SKU is CMR or SMR. The guide also recommends at least 8 GB RAM for basic TrueNAS operations with up to eight drives; it recommends at least 16 GB for good performance and 32 GB or more for optimal performance when using iSCSI to back up VMs. See the TrueNAS Hardware Guide for the versioned technical guidance.

When a two-device setup makes sense

A NAS for bulk storage plus a mini PC for applications can separate storage from compute, which may be useful as a homelab grows. It is not a mandatory beginner setup: it means buying and maintaining two systems, and whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on budget, workload, and the value of keeping those roles separate.

Use a short checklist before buying

  • Write down the primary job: running services and learning virtualization, or storing and sharing files across multiple disks.
  • For compute, verify the exact hardware: CPU, memory, networking, expansion, and cooling for the planned workloads.
  • For storage, verify the exact layout: bay count, drive compatibility, disk handling, and software support for the storage and backup workflow you want.
  • Plan a separate backup: redundancy inside the device does not replace another copy of important data.
  • Estimate power with your own measurements: include drives and add-on cards in the NAS configuration, and use your local electricity tariff.
