Neither mineral nor chemical sunscreen is universally better for everyday wear. The better choice is a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that feels comfortable enough for you to apply regularly. For sensitive skin, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends mineral sunscreen; if sunscreen stings or burns, it advises trying a formula containing only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
What distinguishes mineral and chemical sunscreen?
Check the active-ingredient panel on the product label. Under the AAD’s consumer definition, sunscreen containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both is mineral (also called physical) sunscreen. A product containing neither is chemical sunscreen. A formula using ingredients from both categories may be described as hybrid.
The category alone does not tell you whether a sunscreen offers the protection you need or whether you will like wearing it. Compare the label and the product’s feel rather than relying on broad claims about one type being safer, more effective, or more comfortable for everyone.
How to compare sunscreens for everyday use
Start with broad-spectrum protection and SPF
The AAD recommends choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is water resistant and SPF 30 or higher. Broad spectrum means the product protects against UVA as well as UVB. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that SPF primarily reflects protection against sunburn; it is not a measure of how many extra hours you can stay in the sun.

Match water resistance to what you will be doing
U.S. sunscreen labels specify water resistance for either 40 or 80 minutes. Follow the directions on the specific product. AAD guidance calls for reapplying every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. During swimming or sweating, its label guidance calls for reapplication after 40 minutes for a water-resistant product or after 80 minutes for a very water-resistant product. Water resistance does not mean waterproof.
Consider sensitivity and comfort
For sensitive skin, the AAD recommends mineral sunscreen. If sunscreen stings or burns when you apply it, the AAD suggests trying one containing only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This is guidance for a possible personal fit issue, not evidence that chemical sunscreens are unsafe for everyone or that all mineral formulas will feel comfortable on every person.

Texture and finish matter because the sunscreen you can apply consistently is more useful in everyday routines than one you avoid wearing. The available AAD and FDA guidance does not establish that mineral or chemical formulas are universally more cosmetically elegant.

What FDA ingredient updates mean in the United States
FDA’s current sunscreen Q&A says available safety evidence supports a proposal that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, at concentrations up to 25%, are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE). For several other ingredients, FDA says it needs additional data. That status is not the same as a finding that every product containing those ingredients is unsafe.

FDA’s Q&A reports that the agency issued a final order adding bemotrizinol to the U.S. over-the-counter sunscreen monograph on June 10, 2026. It also says FDA issued a final order removing PABA and trolamine salicylate on September 10, 2026. FDA’s consumer statement that people “do not need to take any action” refers to that September removal; it is not a general judgment that one sunscreen category is better.

- Read the active ingredients. Identify whether the formula is mineral, chemical, or hybrid.
- Check the protection claims. Look for broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher.
- Match the water-resistance claim to your plans. Follow the product’s label and reapply as directed.
- Account for your skin and routine. If you have sensitive skin or sunscreen stings, consider the AAD’s mineral-sunscreen guidance. Choose a texture you will use consistently.
