To harvest wheat in Minecraft, wait until the crop is fully grown and brown, then break it using your usual attack or break control. Collect the wheat and seeds, and replant seeds in the farmland to grow the next crop. If you have not started a farm yet, break grass to find seeds, till dirt or grass with a hoe, and plant them in irrigated, well-lit farmland.
How to grow wheat before harvesting
- Break grass to get wheat seeds. The Minecraft Wiki says each grass plant has a 1-in-8 chance of dropping seeds; this is a chance per plant, not a guarantee. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
- Use a hoe on dirt or grass to create farmland, then plant the seeds.
- Keep the farmland irrigated and provide light. Minecraft’s official seeds guide recommends tilled, irrigated farmland and light for growing crops. Minecraft: Taking Inventory: Seeds
- Allow the crop to grow. There is no dependable fixed harvest timer: growth depends on game conditions, and crops need chunk updates. Do not assume crops keep growing when you are far away; chunk-loading behavior differs between Java and Bedrock editions. Minecraft Wiki: Tips and tricks
How to tell when wheat is ready
Wheat passes through eight growth stages. Harvest when the stalk is fully grown and brown. Breaking it sooner may recover a seed, but an immature crop does not give wheat. The crop-farming tutorial estimates that, under its stated assumptions, four-fifths of planted crops reach maturity within 31 minutes; treat that as a reference estimate, not a guaranteed timer for every world, edition, or farm. Harvest and replant the crop
- Use the normal attack or break control for your platform to break the mature wheat. Control wording varies by edition and input setup, so there is no single button instruction that applies to every player.
- Pick up the wheat and seeds dropped by the crop. The cited tutorial reports that a mature plant yields one wheat and one to four seeds.
- Plant seeds back into the farmland to continue the farm. Keep enough seeds for the replanted area before using any surplus elsewhere.
Harvesting a small plot or a larger field

Can bone meal make wheat grow faster?
Yes. The crop-farming tutorial says bone meal advances a crop by a random number of growth stages. It can speed up growth, but the cited source does not establish a cost-benefit calculation or a guaranteed amount of time saved. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
