In Minecraft, tropical fish are most useful for moving a fish to a chosen location, keeping it in a display aquarium, collecting its many variants, and attracting or breeding axolotls. Catch one with a water-filled bucket, then release it wherever you want it to live.
How do you catch and move a tropical fish?
- Find a tropical fish in an ocean and fill a bucket with water.
- Use the water bucket on the fish to capture it. The bucket carries the fish and its water source.
- At the destination, use the bucket again to release the fish and water. You can move it to another ocean area, a river, a pond, or an aquarium at your base.
Minecraft’s Taking Inventory: Tropical Fish, published March 26, 2020, says fish caught in buckets and released do not despawn, unlike fish that spawn naturally in oceans. That makes bucket capture useful when you want a fish to remain in a chosen spot.
Can tropical fish attract or breed axolotls?
Yes. Holding a Bucket of Tropical Fish in either hand can make axolotls swim after you, and the bucket can be used to breed them. These mechanics are recorded in the Minecraft Java Edition 1.17 release notes. A Bedrock beta changelog dated March 31, 2021 also documents axolotls following a player holding the bucket and breeding with Buckets of Tropical Fish. Those records establish the mechanics in the cited releases; they do not provide a complete comparison of every current Java and Bedrock version.
Can you make an aquarium or automate fish release?
You can release bucket-caught fish into an aquarium at your base for display. For an automated release, put a bucket of fish in a dispenser and activate it: the dispenser releases the fish and a water block in front of it, as described in Minecraft’s official tropical fish article.
