To make smooth sandstone in Minecraft, place four regular sandstone blocks in a 2×2 crafting grid. The output is one smooth sandstone block.
Recipe for smooth sandstone
- Open your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table.
- Place four regular sandstone blocks in the grid, one in each slot of a 2×2 square.
- Move the smooth sandstone from the result slot into your inventory.
Minecraft’s official sandstone guide gives this four-block recipe.
Use regular sandstone, not another variant
The ingredient is regular sandstone. Cut sandstone and chiseled sandstone are distinct blocks, so do not substitute them for the recipe ingredient. The official guide describes chiseled sandstone as the temple block with a creeper face.

If you have the recipe unlocked, use the recipe book to view it and its required materials. The book is available from your inventory or a crafting table; Minecraft’s crafting guide explains how to use it.
