Collect powder snow with a bucket. You can scoop it directly from snowy mountain terrain, or place a cauldron outside in a snowy biome and collect the powder snow after it fills during snowfall.
What you need to collect powder snow
- A bucket, which is used to pick up and place powder snow.
- For the cauldron method, a cauldron outdoors in a snowy biome while snow is falling.
Mojang describes the block as “powder snow,” rather than “powdered snow.” Its Block of the Week article identifies mountain grove and snowy slopes as places to find it. Exact terrain generation can depend on your Minecraft edition and version.
Method 1: Scoop powder snow from mountain terrain
- Explore snowy mountain terrain, including mountain grove or snowy slopes.
- When you find a powder snow block, use a bucket on it to collect the block.
This route is practical when you have already located powder snow and want to gather it where it appears.

Method 2: Collect snowfall with a cauldron
- Place a cauldron outdoors in a snowy biome.
- Wait for snow to fall at that location. The cauldron fills with powder snow while it snows.
- Use a bucket on the filled cauldron to collect the powder snow.
This gives you a way to gather powder snow without scooping it from a mountain block. It depends on snowfall where the cauldron is placed; Mojang’s Java Edition update notes document the cauldron mechanic.

How to cross powder snow safely
Wear leather boots when walking through powder snow. Mojang’s update notes say leather boots prevent you from sinking into it, which can make it easier to reach blocks you want to collect.
