The easiest elevator to build in Minecraft is a bubble-column water lift: put soul sand beneath a column of source water to travel up, or magma beneath a second source-water column to travel down. The key detail is that every water block in the column must be a source block; flowing water breaks the bubbles.
What you need for a Minecraft water elevator
- Solid blocks to enclose the shaft
- Water buckets, or access to water and kelp for filling the shaft
- Soul sand for the upward lift
- Magma block for a separate downward lift
- An open entrance and a safe exit at each floor
A bubble column is generated when soul sand or magma sits in water. Soul sand pushes entities upward; magma pulls them downward. The column continues only through source water, not flowing water or waterlogged blocks. See the Minecraft Wiki’s bubble-column mechanics reference.
How to build an elevator that goes up
- Build the shaft. Make a narrow, enclosed vertical passage between the floors you want to connect. Leave an entrance near the bottom and an exit at the top.
- Fill the shaft with source water. Place water so each space in the column is a source block. In Survival, it is usually easier to fill the shaft before installing the soul sand, since the active upward bubbles make it difficult to swim down through the column.
- Use kelp if you start with falling water. Pour water from the top, then swim upward and place kelp through the column. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial explains that kelp converts the falling water into source blocks. Remove the kelp when the column is filled.
- Place soul sand at the base. Once the water column is ready, replace the bottom block with soul sand. Bubbles should appear through the column.
- Ride the lift. Step into the water at the entrance and let the bubbles carry you upward to the exit.
If the bubbles stop partway up, check for a flowing-water block or a waterlogged block in the shaft. Convert the affected spaces to source water before using the lift.

How to add a downward elevator
Build a second enclosed water shaft for the descent. Fill it with source water in the same way, then place magma at the bottom instead of soul sand. Enter the water column to be pulled down.

Plan the bottom exit carefully. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial warns that landing at the base can hurt the player if they do not sneak. Make sure the landing and exit are safe for your build, and use care when stepping out of the column.
How fast are bubble elevators?
The Minecraft Wiki reports approximate bubble-column movement rates that vary by edition. These are game-mechanics figures, not independently measured performance tests.

Rates are approximate and can help with planning, but the main practical difference is that the magma descent is slower than the upward ride in both editions. See the Minecraft Wiki bubble-column reference.
Why the elevator may not work
- No bubbles appear: Confirm that the bottom block is soul sand for an upward lift or magma for a downward lift, and that it is in water.
- The bubbles stop before the top: Inspect the column for flowing water or waterlogged blocks. Every block along the route must be source water.
- It is hard to fill in Survival: Fill the shaft before placing soul sand, or use the kelp method to convert a falling column into source blocks.
- The descent causes damage: Improve the landing and exit arrangement, and heed the tutorial’s warning to sneak when arriving at the magma base.
When to use another elevator design
Bubble columns suit straightforward vertical travel when a water shaft fits the build. Other elevator families, including piston, boat, minecart, honey-block, and command-based designs, involve different complexity and material trade-offs.
