For most newcomers looking for a gentler start, Minecraft Dungeons II is the better provisional pick. Xbox presents it as approachable, and a GamesRadar review describes its early play as streamlined. That is not a controlled comparison with Diablo IV, however, and Dungeons II’s later Soul Storms can be substantially tougher. Diablo IV also offers a staged difficulty path and does not require beginners to start at its highest challenge.
How beginner-friendly is Minecraft Dungeons II?
Minecraft describes Dungeons II as an action RPG adventure built around new missions, enemies, and areas. Xbox’s official framing is that the sequel expands gameplay and build expression while retaining approachable play. That makes it the more promising choice if you want to get into action-RPG combat without beginning with a sprawling set of progression systems.
There is an important limit to that recommendation: “approachable” does not mean consistently easy. In its September 28, 2026 review, GamesRadar characterized the game as streamlined for younger players but said difficulty rises in late-game Soul Storms, where tougher enemies can become frustrating. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a measured comparison with Diablo IV.

No. Diablo IV has more prominently emphasized systems: Blizzard describes a campaign, expansive endgame, skill trees, and gear progression. Those give players more build and advancement decisions to explore, but they do not make the game inaccessible by default. Blizzard’s difficulty guide describes a progression path that lets players start at a lower tier and unlock higher challenges over time.

Diablo IV’s early difficulty path
- Expert: Blizzard says this difficulty unlocks after the prologue.
- Penitent: Blizzard says this unlocks after the final quest in the base campaign, or when a player skips the base game’s main questline.
- Torment: Higher Torment tiers and endgame challenges provide further difficulty progression.
The presence of these systems means Diablo IV can suit a beginner who wants a campaign with room to develop into deeper buildcraft and endgame play. It may feel like more to learn than Dungeons II, but “more systems” is not the same as “impossible for new players.”

Choose Dungeons II if you want an easier on-ramp and less emphasis on mastering a broad progression structure. Choose Diablo IV if you are comfortable learning skill trees and gear in exchange for a more developed campaign-to-endgame progression. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on whether you value a gentler opening or deeper ongoing character development.

Can you play with friends, and where are the games available?
Minecraft announced Dungeons II as available on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Blizzard lists cross-play and cross-progression for Diablo IV, as well as couch co-op on Xbox. Check the current multiplayer support for your specific platform and setup before buying, since those details can vary by platform.
