Minecraft Dungeons II keeps its build choices approachable, while Diablo IV asks players to manage more interconnected character and item systems. That is a difference in design priorities, not proof that one game is objectively better or that Diablo IV is too complicated for everyone. Dungeons II still has meaningful loot and loadout decisions; it simply puts co-op action and accessible experimentation closer to the forefront.
How Minecraft Dungeons II and Diablo IV differ
Minecraft Dungeons II is a narrative-driven action RPG, not the open-world Minecraft game about exploration, gathering resources, and building. Mojang describes it as a combat-focused adventure. It shares the loot-driven action-RPG genre with Diablo IV, but the games ask players to engage with their character builds in different ways.
In a June 2026 hands-on preview based on a demo, Xbox Wire editor Will Fulton described Dungeons II as adding build expression while keeping play friendly and streamlined. He contrasted that approach with a broader genre tendency to add endgame systems for players who want to customize and min-max. That is Fulton’s assessment of the design, not a measured complexity ranking of the two games. Read the Xbox Wire preview.

| System | Minecraft Dungeons II | Diablo IV |
|---|---|---|
| Core build choices | Weapons, armor, enchants, talismans, and artifacts to combine into a playstyle, according to the official launch description. Minecraft launch page | Class skill trees and passives, along with gear that can affect skills. Blizzard systems overview |
| Later progression and item systems | The official launch description names the loadout components above; it does not establish a directly equivalent progression system to Diablo IV’s Paragon Boards. | Paragon Boards unlock at level 50; Blizzard also documents legendary effects, extraction of legendary bonuses, and item crafting. The exact systems available can change with updates and seasons. Blizzard systems overview |
The distinction is not “buildcrafting versus no buildcrafting.” Dungeons II gives players gear and enchantment combinations to try, while Diablo IV’s documented systems connect skill selection, passives, progression boards, and item powers. Players who enjoy tuning a character across several systems may welcome that breadth in Diablo IV; those who would rather spend less time managing a build may find Dungeons II’s framing more inviting.

Why Diablo IV can feel more involved over time
Diablo IV’s systems build on one another. A player can choose skills and passives, later add Paragon progression from level 50, and adjust how gear affects a character. Blizzard’s guide also describes extracting legendary bonuses and crafting items. The number of choices is not itself a problem: these layers can give players more ways to specialize, but they can also mean more decisions to learn and revisit.
Blizzard announced changes to Tempering and Masterworking in its Season of Divine Intervention announcement, alongside other seasonal systems. Because an announcement does not by itself confirm the live state of a game, check the current in-game or official seasonal information before relying on those details. What streamlined means in Dungeons II
Dungeons II still asks players to assess loot. Weapons, armor, enchants, talismans, and artifacts provide choices that shape a loadout; streamlined does not mean automatic or consequence-free. GamesRadar+ reviewer Justin Towell reported frequent loot checking in the course of his review, alongside praise for the accessible start and experimentation. He also noted bugs and repetition. Those are observations from one review, not outcomes every player should expect. Read the GamesRadar+ review.

Towell said he completed the story in about 12 hours, with four hours in co-op and the rest solo. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not a promised completion time; playstyle and optional activities can affect how long a campaign takes.

Playing with friends and starting the series
Dungeons II supports solo play or up to four players in online or couch co-op. Mojang’s FAQ says mixed co-op is supported, so players on the same console or PC can join players online, and it lists online cross-play. The FAQ also confirms that playing the first Minecraft Dungeons is not required. Check the official Dungeons II FAQ for the current details.
This makes the game a practical fit for a group that wants to start an action-RPG session without first agreeing on a long-term build plan. Diablo IV’s deeper character and item systems may be the better match for a group that actively enjoys comparing upgrades and optimizing builds.

- Choose Minecraft Dungeons II if you want a combat-focused, co-op-friendly adventure with loot and build choices presented in a more streamlined way, or if you are new to the series.
- Choose Diablo IV if you want to spend more time exploring layered character progression, skill and passive choices, and item systems.
- Do not decide based on “easy” versus “hard” alone. The more useful question is whether you enjoy managing a wider set of connected build decisions or prefer action and experimentation with less system overhead.
The headline’s “too complicated” phrasing is an editorial opinion about friction some players experience, not a universal verdict on Diablo IV. Fulton captured that trade-off in his demo preview: “That’s great when I want a puzzle to min-max, but when I’m not in the mood to spend an hour re-speccing my whole build around a new item, it can be too much friction between me and the actual gameplay.”
