Minecraft Dungeons II is a worthwhile upgrade if you enjoyed the first game’s accessible action-RPG loop and want more territory, more build options and a larger story. It is not yet proven to be a necessary one. The official material and the preview evidence point to a broader sequel that keeps the series’ friendly pace, but the only published review we can cite raises platform-specific performance and platforming points that matter to some buyers. Whether the changes justify a return trip depends on how much you want more of the same formula, which is the question the rest of this article helps you answer.
What Minecraft Dungeons II is and when it launched
Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026, according to Mojang’s official launch article. It is available on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Those are the platforms named in the launch announcement, so check the store page for your own platform before buying.
Mojang describes the game as an action-RPG adventure set in the Minecraft universe. It follows the events of Minecraft Dungeons. Strange rifts open across the Overworld, mobs become infused with unusual energies, and sculk spreads through the world. The story also introduces the Sift, a dimension the franchise had not shown before.
What the sequel says it changes
Mojang’s official overview leans on new and unfamiliar territory, the Sift, strange mobs and a series of mysteries. Xbox Wire’s official preview, published June 10, 2026, frames the sequel as broadening combat and build expression while keeping the experience approachable. Both are statements of intent from the developer and publisher. They tell you what the game is trying to do, not how well it does it.
#1 Best Overall
- Drop the pickaxe, grab a sword, and charge into a thrilling new adventure in the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition
The useful test is how these changes alter the rhythm of play. Ask three things:
- Exploration: Does the interconnected world give you more reasons to wander and revisit areas than the first game did?
- Build choice: Do the expanded combat and build options produce meaningfully different characters, or mostly new numbers on the same loop?
- Repetition: Do repeated missions stay interesting once you know the layouts and enemies?
The preview’s own wording is the clearest statement of the publisher’s ambition. Xbox Wire wrote: “Minecraft Dungeons II strikes a really smart middle ground between the first game and its genre peers by increasing gameplay and build expressivity, while keeping things decidedly friendly and streamlined.” That sentence is an editorial line on Xbox Wire’s official site, not a quote from a named developer, so attribute it to Xbox Wire.

What the one published review found
GamesRadar’s review discusses jumping, jump attacks and platforming as new parts of the movement and combat mix. It also reports some slowdown on Xbox Series X around a Storm Tower. That is one reviewer’s experience on one platform, and it should not be read as a performance verdict for the other platforms.
Because only this one review was available for this assessment, there is no critical consensus to point to. Treat the GamesRadar observations as a checklist for your own first hours: test jumping and platforming early, and if you play on Xbox Series X, watch for slowdown in the areas it describes.

Editions and what the Deluxe Edition adds
Minecraft Help lists the content of each edition. The table below uses only the items it names. The sources reviewed for this article do not state the price of either edition, so check the store page for current pricing.
| Item | Standard Edition | Deluxe Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition content | Included | Included |
| Soul Cape | Not included | Included |
| Blub Pet | Not included | Included |
| Exclusive Hero Skins | Not included | Four |

Deluxe is a fair purchase if you already plan to play the game long term and want the cosmetics and the two announced DLC packs. If you are unsure whether you will finish the base game, buy Standard and upgrade later, since Minecraft Help states that Standard owners can upgrade.

Ownership, Microsoft Store access and Game Pass
Minecraft Help says a digital purchase through the Microsoft Store on Xbox or Windows lets you play on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs without buying the game again. That condition applies to this specific Microsoft Store purchase route. A copy bought on another storefront, such as Steam, does not carry that cross-device benefit, so confirm the store before you buy if you plan to switch between an Xbox and a Windows PC.

Is it a necessary upgrade?
The question is whether the sequel changes enough to justify another round with the formula. Based on the documented evidence, the answer depends on your priorities:
- Buy it now if you want a bigger world, the Sift and new mobs, and you are happy with a friendly, streamlined action-RPG pace.
- Wait for more reviews if your main concern is combat depth. The publisher’s claims about expressive builds are not yet backed by multiple independent reviews.
- Check your platform first if you play on Xbox Series X and want to avoid the slowdown GamesRadar reported around a Storm Tower.
- Stick with the first game if you finished it and found its repetition tiring. The sequel’s documented changes are about expanding that loop rather than replacing it.
The fair verdict is that Minecraft Dungeons II looks like a meaningful expansion of a formula that already works for many players. “Necessary” is a stronger word than the available evidence supports.
Before purchase, confirm the platform, the edition you want, and the store that will hold your copy.
