To craft concrete stairs or slabs in Minecraft, first make concrete powder with four sand, four gravel, and one dye. Place the powder block in full contact with water to turn it into solid concrete, then craft the concrete blocks into stairs or slabs. The shapes are documented for all 16 colors in Mojang’s testing-release coverage; check your edition and build before relying on their availability.

Check whether your Minecraft build has concrete stairs and slabs

Availability depends on the edition and build. Mojang’s Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 7 notes list concrete stairs and slabs for all concrete blocks. Mojang’s 2026 Drop 3 testing article describes the feature in Java snapshots and says Bedrock beta and preview support was coming soon at the time of publication. That article also cautions that the features were still in development. These sources establish testing-release availability, not availability in every current stable release.

If your build supports the shapes, you can craft them in Survival or access them from the Creative inventory, as described in Mojang’s testing article. If the blocks do not appear in your crafting interface or inventory, check that you are running a build that includes the feature.

Make concrete powder in the color you want

Use a crafting table to combine four sand, four gravel, and one dye. The dye determines the powder’s color. Minecraft supports 16 concrete colors, so choose the dye for the shade you want before crafting.

  • 4 sand
  • 4 gravel
  • 1 dye of your chosen color

The powder recipe is the same regardless of color; only the dye changes. Concrete powder is affected by gravity, so it can fall if placed without support.

Turn the powder into solid concrete

  1. Place each concrete powder block as a block in the world. Dropping the powder as an item into water does not convert it.
  2. Bring the placed powder into full contact with water. You can place it in water or let water flow against it.
  3. Collect the resulting solid concrete blocks.

Rain and water bottles do not convert concrete powder. Mojang’s concrete powder guide documents the water-contact requirement and these limitations.

Shape Crafting arrangement Output
Stairs Six same-color concrete blocks arranged in a stair pattern 4 stairs
Slabs Three same-color concrete blocks in a horizontal row 6 slabs

These exact grid arrangements and yields are reported by All Things How’s recipe guide; Mojang’s cited testing materials confirm the powder-to-concrete-to-shape process and 16-color range, but do not specify the grid or output quantities. Arrange blocks in the corresponding shape pattern in the crafting grid and use blocks of one color for each batch.
