Minecraft Adventure Mode is designed for creator-made worlds where players should follow an intended experience without freely changing the map. By default, players generally cannot break or place blocks unless they hold items that permit those actions. This helps protect routes, puzzles, and structures in an adventure map.

What Adventure Mode changes

Minecraft Help describes Adventure Mode as a way for creators to “craft a unique experience for guests to their world.” Unlike a separate game or downloadable map, it is a game mode that changes how players interact with a world. Its central constraint is block editing: players generally cannot break or place blocks unless they have special items that allow it. Minecraft Help’s game-mode overview gives this high-level description.

That restriction can help a map creator preserve a puzzle, keep a route intact, or prevent visitors from dismantling structures. Adventure Mode is therefore most useful when the creator wants visitors to play within designed boundaries rather than reshape the environment.

How Adventure compares with Creative and Survival

The main distinction is how much freedom players have to alter the world and what kind of experience the mode is intended to support. Minecraft’s overview describes Creative around building with unlimited resources, and Survival around exploration, gathering resources, crafting, combat, health, and hunger. Adventure is used to constrain block changes in creator-designed experiences. The overview does not establish that Adventure matches Survival in every other mechanic.

How to switch to Adventure Mode

Bedrock Edition command

In Bedrock Edition, enter /gamemode adventure. Microsoft Learn also documents a and 2 as accepted values for Adventure Mode; the documented command page was last updated May 6, 2025. The command can target a player, but the person issuing it needs the required permissions and the world must allow commands. See Microsoft Learn’s popular commands reference for Bedrock syntax.

Allowing commands in a world

For single-player command use, Minecraft’s command guide says Bedrock worlds can enable “Allow Cheats,” while Java single-player worlds have an “Allow Commands” setting. On a multiplayer server, command use depends on having sufficient permissions. In Bedrock, enabling cheats permanently disables achievement unlocking in that world, even if cheats are subsequently turned off. Check Minecraft’s command guide before changing world settings.

Can you break or place blocks in Adventure Mode?

Usually not with ordinary items: Adventure Mode generally prevents breaking and placing blocks. Special items can permit those actions, so the restriction is not absolute. This allows a creator to give a player only the tools needed for a particular obstacle or task while keeping other parts of the map protected.

Why item behavior differs by edition

Some references describe Java item tags as CanDestroy and CanPlaceOn, with corresponding Bedrock tags named can_destroy and can_place_on. Exact item-tag behavior and command syntax depend on edition and game version. The official sources cited above explain the player-facing restriction but do not confirm current copy-and-paste item commands for both editions. For tag details, consult the secondary reference The Minecraft Wiki’s Adventure page and verify any syntax against documentation for your current edition and version rather than relying on an unverified command.
