A migration guide can be accurate for its stated upgrade path and still be wrong for your setup. Before following it, verify the product, exact source and target versions, runtime, configuration, and any intermediate releases it assumes. Migration instructions are conditional procedures—not universal recipes—and an online page may not cover the version transition you need.
Why a migration guide can be wrong for your setup
“Is this migration guide still accurate for my version?” is the practical question to ask. A guide applies to a defined product and transition. Its steps may change when a new release alters runtime requirements, defaults, configuration formats, or breaking behavior. The guide may still be correct within its scope; the mismatch is between that scope and your environment.
There is no established industry-wide rate at which migration guides become stale, or one safe method that applies to every product. Check the official instructions for your particular stack and target.

- Record your starting point. Write down the product and exact source version, the intended target version, the installed runtime, and any relevant custom configuration or dependencies.
- Match the guide to the transition. Check its product and release scope, prerequisites, and publication or update date when shown. Confirm it covers your source-to-target path rather than only the target release.
- Check intermediate releases. If you are crossing several versions, read the applicable migration guides and release notes for the releases in between. Apache Tomcat explicitly advises consulting the guides for the versions crossed when upgrading across releases (Tomcat upgrade guidance).
- Review configuration and defaults. Compare your current files with the target release’s stock configuration and identify changed defaults or new settings. Tomcat recommends adapting a stock installation for a major-version upgrade rather than copying old configuration files wholesale (Tomcat Migration Guide).
- Check runtime and code compatibility. Confirm required runtime versions, dependencies, deprecated or obsolete APIs, and compatibility notes. Microsoft’s .NET Framework migration resources point developers to compatibility, dependency, obsolete API, and new-feature information (Microsoft .NET Framework migration guide).
- Run checks in the intended environment. Treat automated analysis as evidence with boundaries, not as proof that every behavior is safe. Re-run environment-dependent checks if runtime configuration or other relevant settings change.
- Plan recovery and validate behavior. Define a rollback approach appropriate to the platform and the risk to data, then verify application behavior after each relevant migration step. Rollback and downtime requirements are specific to the system being upgraded.
Examples of version-specific migration guidance
AWS CLI v1 to v2: tools have different coverage
AWS describes two aids for moving from AWS CLI version 1 to version 2. In AWS’s current migration guide, accessed in 2026, upgrade debug mode can detect 15 of 16 documented breaking changes by checking commands as they execute. Its findings depend on the execution environment. AWS says its standalone migration tool statically lints Bash scripts and detects 7 of the 16 changes; it cannot detect behavior determined at runtime (AWS CLI version 2 migration guide). These figures describe AWS’s comparison of its own tools and documented changes, not migration tools generally.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Apache Tomcat: major and minor upgrades are different
Tomcat distinguishes major-version upgrades from minor upgrades because their procedures differ. For a major upgrade, its guidance is to start with a stock installation and adapt configuration for the new version; it says not to copy old configuration files wholesale. For a minor upgrade, existing configuration may often remain usable, but readers should still check changed defaults and new configuration elements. If the upgrade crosses several releases, consult each applicable intermediate guide (Tomcat Migration Guide; Tomcat upgrade guidance).
Nevis ID Manager: the guide names a specific LTS path
Nevis’s guide covers LTS-2024 (8.2405.x) to LTS-2026 (8.2607.x), and directs readers to perform the manual steps relevant to their setup and environment. It recommends a staged move: first to the initial LTS-2026 release, then to the latest LTS-2026 version. For nevisIDM 8.2607.x, it states that Java 21 or older is insufficient and Java 25 is required. Those requirements belong to this product and release path; they should not be generalized to other software (Nevis ID Manager migration guide).

.NET Framework: runtime compatibility is not the same as code migration
Microsoft’s migration resources distinguish applications that may run on a later framework version without recompilation from upgrades that require code changes. Developers are directed to check application compatibility, dependencies, obsolete class-library APIs, and newer features. A compatibility result alone does not establish that an application’s code or behavior needs no review (Microsoft .NET Framework migration guide).
What a study of migration guides found—and what it does not prove
A 2026 paper, How Do Developers Use Migration Guides? A Case Study of Log4j, reports that in its preliminary survey, 92.08% of libraries with breaking changes had release notes and 27.72% had migration guides. In its Log4j case study, 82.81% of guide references linked to the entire guide rather than a specific section. The authors also report that developers consult migration guides during later maintenance as well as major updates (2026 Log4j migration-guide study).

These are findings from the paper’s sample and case study, not universal rates for software projects. They do underline a practical point: a guide’s existence, or a link to it, does not establish that its instructions cover a particular upgrade path.
