The Miele Compact C1 Ecoline 12396540 is a discontinued bagged canister vacuum listed in Australian and New Zealand consumer sources. CHOICE records 550 W stated power, 6.44 kg weight and 8.5 m reach, but its public page does not reveal the model’s test scores. Its listed accessories make it a practical-looking general-purpose setup on paper; for a used unit, condition, included tools and local parts matter more than historical list prices.
What is the Miele Compact C1 Ecoline 12396540?
CHOICE identifies the Australian-market 12396540 as a bagged barrel vacuum. Consumer NZ names the variant “Miele Compact C1 Ecoline SCAP3 12396540.” Both sources mark it discontinued, so treat it as a used or remaining-stock model rather than assuming it is currently sold new. CHOICE’s product record and Consumer NZ’s listing document the model and status.
The listed prices are historical record values, not current offers: CHOICE shows A$399.00 and A$9.75 per bag, while Consumer NZ displays NZ$519 on a product record last updated in January 2025. These figures should not be used to judge today’s second-hand value or availability.
How well does it clean?
There is not enough publicly visible test data to give this exact model a defensible cleaning verdict or score. CHOICE lists test categories that include carpet cleaning, pet hair, corners and edges, noise, ease of use, reliability and satisfaction, but gates the Expert Rating and results behind membership. Consumer NZ also locks its scores and results. Neither public page supports calling the vacuum a proven top performer.

- Fits Kenmore canister vacuum cleaners that use type Q replacement bags
- Installation is quick and easy to replace
- HEPA media filtration captures 99.97% of dust and more, as small as 0.3 microns

The sources establish that consumer testing exists, not that this article’s writer has tested the machine. If you are choosing a used unit, test it on the floor types you have, inspect the floorhead and suction tube, and confirm that controls and cord rewind work before buying.
Specifications and included accessories
CHOICE’s Australian product record lists these figures and supplied items. The retailer Leader & Watt separately describes SKU 12396540 as a 550 W EcoLine model with a universal floorhead, EasyLock sectioned suction tube and 9 m operating radius; those are retailer descriptions, not current official manufacturer specifications.

The 8.5 m figure is CHOICE’s reach measurement, while the 9 m figure is a retailer-advertised operating radius. They use different source labels and should not be treated as a single reconciled measurement. Similarly, the 577 W figure is measured power; it is distinct from the 550 W stated rating.
CHOICE’s accessory list is useful when checking a second-hand listing, but it cannot confirm what is in a particular box. Ask for photos of the actual tools and machine, especially if you need the floorhead or small attachments.

Which bags and filters fit?
Miele’s Italian compatibility information lists FJM HyClean Pure bags for Compact C1 and Compact C2 models, and its product listing also names Compact C1 among compatible models. This makes genuine FJM bags the best-supported replacement-bag match for the Compact C1 family. Check the label or manual on your specific machine before ordering, particularly if it has been bought second-hand or comes from a different regional market.
Miele Germany identifies AirClean Filter 50 for Compact C1 and Compact C2. That family-level information does not establish which filter is currently installed in an individual 12396540 unit. Verify the filter designation against the appliance documentation or with Miele using the full model details.

What to check before buying a discontinued unit
- Condition: Run the vacuum and check suction, controls, cord rewind, hose, tube joints, wheels and floorhead. Look for cracks, damaged seals or a burning smell.
- Completeness: Compare the seller’s actual tools with the CHOICE accessory list, rather than assuming every regional or used package is identical.
- Consumables: Confirm FJM bag fitment and filter type using the machine label or manual, then check local availability and cost.
- Local support: Ask about repair options, parts availability and any warranty that applies to that exact sale. The cited discontinued listings do not establish current warranty coverage or parts stock.
- Value: Base an offer on the machine’s condition and what is included. The Australian and New Zealand page prices above are not live market quotes.
If comparing it with another vacuum, weigh documented cleaning results, floorhead suitability, reach and handling, ongoing bag and filter costs, repair support, warranty and the actual purchase condition. No current alternative or offer has been assessed here, so there is no evidence-based winner to name.
