MIDI-OX is a Windows utility for viewing MIDI messages, diagnosing device connections, routing or filtering MIDI streams, and working with System Exclusive (SysEx) data. You can use it to check whether a keyboard or controller is sending messages to Windows—but seeing messages in MIDI-OX does not prove that a DAW is configured to receive or use them.

What MIDI-OX does

The official MIDI-OX description calls it both a diagnostic tool and a SysEx librarian. It can display incoming MIDI streams, send them to an output driver or MIDI Mapper, filter and map streams, record or log data, and convert a log into a Standard MIDI File for playback in a sequencer. It is software, not a MIDI interface or hardware device. The official site credits Jamie O’Connell and Jerry Jorgenrud as its creators. MIDI-OX official product page.

MIDI-OX is freeware according to its official product page. The download page lists version 7.0.2, dated 17 June 2010, and also offers older versions. That listing identifies the publisher’s listed version; it does not establish that the software is a recent release or certified for current Windows versions. MIDI-OX download page.

How to check whether a MIDI device is sending data

  1. Connect the device. Connect your keyboard, controller, or instrument to the computer and make sure its Windows device or driver is available. A USB MIDI interface is only needed if your instrument’s connection requires one; a USB MIDI controller may connect directly.
  2. Select the MIDI input. In MIDI-OX, open Options > MIDI Devices and select the device as an input. Select output ports too only if you are configuring output or port mapping. Serato’s MIDI-OX setup instructions.
  3. Reduce possible interference. Close other audio or MIDI programs during the test. M-Audio recommends this when checking a device with a MIDI monitor. M-Audio’s MIDI-monitor troubleshooting instructions.
  4. Generate a message. Play a note or move the control you want to test, then watch MIDI-OX for incoming data. A note, knob, or button may produce a different kind of MIDI message, so test the specific control in question.
  5. Interpret what appears. Visible data shows that messages are reaching the computer at MIDI-OX’s selected monitoring point. If your DAW still does not respond, check its MIDI input selection and configuration; the monitor does not confirm the DAW’s mapping or the whole routing chain. M-Audio’s troubleshooting walkthrough.
  6. If the monitor stays empty, confirm that the correct input is selected and that the device and driver are set up. If a correctly configured test still shows no messages, contact the hardware maker for further assistance. M-Audio’s troubleshooting walkthrough.

What the test can—and cannot—tell you

  • Messages appear: The device is communicating with Windows along the monitored path. This does not establish that a DAW is listening to that input, that a control is mapped correctly there, or that every later stage of MIDI routing works.
  • No messages appear: The result is a reason to recheck the selected input and device setup, not by itself proof that the controller is faulty.
  • You need routing or SysEx features: MIDI-OX’s functions extend beyond viewing incoming messages to stream filtering, mapping, logging, output routing, and SysEx-related work, as described on the official product page.

Windows compatibility and alternatives

The official MIDI-OX product page describes a 32-bit application for Windows 95/NT and lists compatibility through Vista. That is historical compatibility information; the retrieved official material does not establish support for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Check whether your device and driver appear in Windows and in MIDI-OX rather than assuming the old compatibility statement guarantees operation on a current PC. Microsoft documents a Windows MIDI Monitor and a Windows MIDI Troubleshooting and Repair tool as part of Windows MIDI Services. At the time of the cited documentation, both were described as available to developers, with consumer release planned for November 2026. Those are not general-release alternatives on the basis of that status description; check Microsoft’s current pages for changes before relying on their availability.

For a basic incoming-message check, choose a tool actually available on your Windows installation and compatible with the device and driver. For broader Windows MIDI diagnostics, Microsoft’s tools may be relevant if their availability and requirements fit your setup. MIDI-OX may also suit workflows that depend on its legacy application support or its routing, logging, and SysEx features.
