In technology coverage, a “microphone throat tattoo” is a proposed electronic skin device designed to pick up a person’s voice near the throat and send it to a mobile device. “Tattoo” here means an electronic device applied to the skin—not permanent ink. The concept appears in a 2013 patent application; the available sources do not establish that it became a product for sale.
What the microphone throat tattoo concept describes
The patent application “Coupling an Electronic Skin Tattoo to a Mobile Communication Device” describes a skin-applied device containing a microphone, wireless transceiver, power supply, and controller. Its stated purpose is to provide auxiliary voice input to a mobile communication device. The patent also describes the device as a way to improve the voice signal relative to using the mobile device without it; that is a description of the proposed system, not evidence of a tested commercial product.
The application was published on November 7, 2013, naming Motorola Mobility, Inc. as the applicant and William P. Alberth, Jr. as the inventor. It should be understood as a patent proposal, not proof that Motorola or Google launched the device.
Why it is called a tattoo
In this patent, “electronic skin tattoo” refers to a device applied to the skin. The patent also contemplates putting the electronics in a collar or band worn around the throat, so the idea is not limited to a sticker-like patch. It is distinct from both ink tattoos and a conventional throat microphone headset.

Does it detect lies?
No reliable lie-detection capability is established. The patent proposes an optional galvanic skin-response sensor and speculates that skin resistance might differ when someone is nervous or speaking falsely. That speculative description does not demonstrate that the device can determine whether a person is lying.
Could “microphone throat tattoo” mean tattoo art?
Yes. Someone searching for “microphone tattoo” may mean a literal tattoo design depicting a microphone, often as music-themed body art. For example, Body Art Guru’s profile of Lil Durk’s tattoos uses “microphone tattoo” in that ordinary artistic sense. Context determines whether the phrase refers to ink or the patent’s electronic-device concept.
