Micron’s January 2026 Singapore expansion is a new NAND wafer fabrication facility, not an assembly plant. The company says it plans to invest approximately US$24 billion (SG$31 billion) over 10 years, with wafer output targeted to begin in the second half of 2028. This is separate from Micron’s previously announced HBM advanced packaging facility in Singapore.

What will Micron make in Singapore?

The new facility will fabricate NAND wafers at Micron’s existing NAND manufacturing complex in Singapore and become part of the company’s Singapore NAND Center of Excellence. NAND flash is memory used in products such as solid-state drives. It is the manufacturing of memory wafers—not the assembly of finished retail products—that defines this project. Micron’s January 2026 announcement describes the facility as advanced wafer fabrication.

Micron says the project responds to anticipated NAND demand associated with AI and other data-centric applications, as well as long-term manufacturing needs and technology transitions. The company has not supplied a named, independently published market statistic in the cited materials to quantify that demand.

How much is Micron investing in Singapore?

Micron’s plan is approximately US$24 billion (SG$31 billion) over 10 years for the new wafer fab. The company describes up to 700,000 square feet of cleanroom space as the facility’s ultimate design, not as capacity already built or operating. Those are company plans, not independently verified project outcomes.

Micron says placing research and development alongside manufacturing is intended to improve efficiency, speed technology introduction, and deepen research partnerships with academia. It also says it will adjust the pace of the capacity ramp to market demand; the cited materials do not provide a detailed ramp schedule.

When will Micron’s new Singapore fab start production?

Micron targets the start of wafer output in the second half of calendar 2028. This is a company forecast, not a guaranteed production date. Its announcement treats construction timing and related outcomes as forward-looking statements.

How is the wafer fab different from Micron’s HBM facility?

Micron has a second, separate Singapore project: an advanced packaging facility for high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Wafer fabrication and advanced packaging are distinct manufacturing stages, and the investment, job estimates, and schedules for the two facilities should not be conflated.

What does the expansion mean for jobs and Singapore’s semiconductor ecosystem?

Micron expects the wafer fab to create around 1,600 positions, mainly in fab engineering and operations, with work incorporating AI, robotics, and smart manufacturing. These are projected positions, not confirmed hires. Micron also points to opportunities in internships, workforce upskilling, and R&D talent development.

In a January 27, 2026 speech, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong described the investment as anchoring Singapore’s role in advanced NAND flash manufacturing and supporting the country’s place in semiconductor and AI supply chains. He said: “Micron’s investment in this new wafer fabrication facility is significant not only because of its scale, but because it anchors Singapore’s role in advanced NAND flash memory manufacturing.” This is the government’s policy framing, not an independent forecast of project performance. Gan’s speech also discusses process integration, yield optimization, engineering capabilities, automation, and workforce training.

The speech names Techfox, which customized autonomous mobile robots for Micron shopfloor operations, and logistics partner BHS as examples of Singapore’s local ecosystem. It does not establish that either company is a contractor for the new wafer fab. Gan also said Micron has memoranda of understanding with all five polytechnics, ITEs, and NUS’s College of Design and Engineering to support internships, mentorship, and hands-on learning.
