Micron reported a 27 GB/s result when its PCIe Gen6 data-center SSD endpoint interoperated with an Astera Labs Gen6 switch at DesignCon 2025. That was a demonstration, not an independent consumer benchmark. Micron later specified up to 28 GB/s sequential reads for its 9650 data-center SSD and announced high-volume production in March 2026. The 9650 uses data-center form factors, not the standard M.2 format found in most desktop PCs and laptops.

What the 27 GB/s result actually means

The 27 GB/s figure came from an interoperability demonstration at DesignCon 2025. Micron says Astera Labs demonstrated its PCIe Gen6 switch working with a Micron Gen6 SSD endpoint, which reached 27 GB/s in that setup. The result shows a Gen6 storage device operating with a Gen6 switch; it is not a published independent benchmark of a retail drive in a consumer computer. Micron’s account of the demonstration attributes this description to Larry Hart, Micron senior director of Solution Marketing: “One of the most remarkable aspects of this industry-first PCIe Gen6 interoperability demo is that the Micron PCIe Gen6 data center SSD used in the demo achieved 27 GB/s, likely making this a demonstration of the fastest PCIe Gen6 storage drive to date!” The “likely” ranking is Micron’s characterization, not an independently established industry ranking.

How the 27 GB/s demo relates to Micron’s 9650

The demonstration was an earlier milestone than the 9650 product launch. Micron announced Gen6 SSD technology on August 5, 2024, reporting sequential reads above 26 GB/s and describing technology it was making available to partners to help build the Gen6 ecosystem. That was development and ecosystem enablement, not a mass-production announcement. At DesignCon 2025, the company reported the 27 GB/s interoperability result. On July 29, 2025, it introduced the 9650 portfolio with a maximum sequential-read specification of 28 GB/s. On March 16, 2026, Micron announced that the 9650 had entered high-volume production and linked it to NVIDIA’s BlueField-4 STX reference architecture for AI workloads. Micron’s announcements document those stages: the DesignCon demonstration, the 9650 launch, and the high-volume production announcement.

These figures refer to different claims: 27 GB/s is the reported result of a particular demonstration; 28 GB/s is the 9650’s stated maximum sequential-read bandwidth. Neither figure should be presented as a measured result from an independent consumer review.

Micron 9650 specifications

Micron’s product brief lists the following maximum performance figures for the 9650. They are vendor specifications, not independently reproduced test results.

Metric Micron 9650 maximum
Sequential reads 28,000 MB/s
Sequential writes 14,000 MB/s
Random reads 5.5 million IOPS
Random writes 900,000 IOPS

Micron’s 2026 product blog compares those figures with a PCIe Gen5 SSD at 14,000 MB/s sequential reads, 10,000 MB/s sequential writes, 3.3 million random-read IOPS and 720,000 random-write IOPS. Micron reports advantages of 100%, 40%, 67% and 22%, respectively. These are the company’s published comparisons and maximums, not a third-party head-to-head benchmark. The cited comparison is in Micron’s 9650 product blog; product specifications are in the 9650 product brief.

  • TBW: 300
  • Backed by a 5-year limited warranty or up to 300 TBW, whichever comes first. Please note that the warranty covers standard consumer/business use and is voided if the drive’s total written data exceeds its rated TBW limit.

Micron also discusses efficiency comparisons based on 25-watt operation. Those figures depend on the stated power basis and should not be treated as universal performance-per-watt results across systems or workloads. Its launch release describes the 9650 as twice the sequential-read performance of its previous-generation 9550; that comparison concerns sequential reads against that specific predecessor, not every workload or every Gen5 SSD. Micron’s launch release qualifies some competitive claims by the products available as of May 2025.

Why the 9650 is not a typical PC upgrade

Micron identifies the 9650 as a data-center SSD. Its product brief lists E1.S and E3.S 1T form factors, rather than the M.2 format used by most consumer desktop and laptop NVMe drives. A typical PC therefore cannot use the 9650 as a drop-in SSD upgrade. The product is intended for compatible data-center platforms and infrastructure, where the host interface, chassis, cooling, and system qualification all matter. Micron describes the drive on its 9650 product page.

The product is available in air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations, but liquid cooling is not listed for every variant: Micron’s brief notes support for the E1.S 9.5 mm form factor. Buyers should check the exact configuration and chassis requirements rather than assume all 9650 models support liquid cooling. The 9650’s production status also does not establish retail availability to individual buyers; Micron’s announcement confirms high-volume production, not a consumer retail listing.

What the result means for data-center buyers

For AI and other data-intensive infrastructure, the 9650’s headline read rate is only one part of a storage decision. Buyers evaluating Gen6 against Gen5 should consider:

  • Workload: Sequential transfer rates and random IOPS describe different access patterns. Match the metric to the application rather than relying on a single peak number.
  • Power and cooling: Evaluate power draw and performance per watt under the intended operating conditions, and verify whether the chassis supports the drive’s air- or liquid-cooling configuration.
  • Platform fit: Confirm the host interface, E1.S or E3.S 1T bay, firmware, and system qualification requirements.
  • Deployment status: Check supply, qualification, and availability with the system or storage provider. High-volume production is not the same as a broadly available retail product.

The DesignCon result also highlights the ecosystem work required for Gen6 deployment: the 27 GB/s demonstration involved a compatible PCIe switch as well as the SSD endpoint. Micron has named Broadcom as an early Gen6 ecosystem collaborator, and its production announcement connects the 9650 to NVIDIA’s BlueField-4 STX reference architecture. These partnerships indicate an infrastructure context, not a consumer plug-and-play upgrade.
