Micron announced the Crucial P310 2280 on September 17, 2024, as a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD for compatible PCs, laptops and PlayStation 5 consoles. Micron rates it for sequential reads of up to 7,100MB/s and writes of up to 6,000MB/s. Those are manufacturer specifications measured under defined test conditions, not a guarantee of the speed every system will deliver.
Crucial P310 2280 specifications
The drive uses the standard M.2 2280 form factor (22mm wide and 80mm long) and an NVMe interface over PCIe Gen4. Micron lists three capacities.
| Specification | Micron’s published figure or description |
|---|---|
| Capacities | 500GB, 1TB and 2TB |
| Form factor | M.2 2280 |
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 NVMe |
| Sequential read | Up to 7,100MB/s |
| Sequential write | Up to 6,000MB/s |
| Random read | Up to 1 million IOPS |
| Random write | Up to 1.2 million IOPS |
| Warranty | Five years, subject to the published maximum total-bytes-written limit |
All figures in this table come from Micron’s September 17, 2024 announcement, not from an independent laboratory review. Capacity and endurance details can vary by specific retail model, so check the label and product documentation for the exact SKU.

Micron measured the headline sequential figures with CrystalDiskMark, command queue full, write cache enabled and the drive in a fresh-out-of-box state. Sequential transfers are long, contiguous operations; real applications also perform smaller random reads and writes, background housekeeping and mixed workloads.
#1 Best Overall
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 1TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
Results can be lower when the SSD is nearly full, after its cache is exhausted, in a laptop with power-saving settings, or in a system with a slower PCIe link. Thermal throttling, firmware, CPU overhead and the workload itself also affect performance. The 1-million-IOPS and 1.2-million-IOPS ratings are likewise “up to” manufacturer figures rather than guaranteed everyday rates.
Compatibility: check the device before buying
Micron describes the P310 2280 as backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems and targets it at PCs, laptops and PlayStation 5. Backward compatibility does not establish that every device configuration will accept the drive or deliver Gen4 performance.

PC or laptop checklist
- Confirm that the motherboard or laptop has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe over PCIe, rather than an M.2 SATA-only slot.
- Check the supported module length. The P310 is 2280; a device designed only for 2230 or 2242 modules may not provide the correct mounting point.
- Verify the slot’s PCIe generation. A Gen3 slot can use the SSD but will limit link bandwidth below Gen4 levels.
- Measure clearance around the slot, including the underside of a laptop cover, motherboard graphics card and any existing heatsink.
- Review the system manual for boot-drive support and any lane-sharing restrictions that could disable another connector.
PlayStation 5 considerations
Although Micron lists PlayStation 5 as a target platform, the console has its own physical clearance, firmware and heatsink requirements. Confirm that the exact P310 model fits the PS5 expansion bay and use a heatsink solution approved for that space. The announcement does not provide a device-by-device compatibility matrix.
Warranty and endurance
Micron states a five-year warranty, but the warranty ends earlier if the drive reaches its published maximum total bytes written (TBW). TBW is the manufacturer’s endurance limit for data written to the SSD; it is separate from the drive’s capacity and from a speed rating. Check the warranty document and the exact capacity’s datasheet for the applicable TBW value before relying on the five-year period.

How Micron’s comparisons were made
Micron says its real-world comparison used PCMark 10 and named the Samsung 990 EVO and WD SN580 as comparison drives. The release also relies on published specifications for some comparisons and warns that system conditions change results. These statements indicate how Micron tested its product; they are not independent confirmation that the P310 is faster in every workload.
For a meaningful purchase comparison, use the same capacity and examine sustained-write behavior, random performance, warranty and TBW, controller and NAND details, thermals, and your system’s PCIe generation. A drive that reaches its rated peak in a desktop benchmark may behave differently in a thin laptop or a console enclosure.

- Broad Compatibility: Works with Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Microsoft Surface, and select Dell laptops for easy portable upgrades
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100MB/s read and 6,000MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious NVMe SSD: This 1TB SSD provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with compact M.2 2230 NVMe SSD form factor for casual gamers and home users

- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
Availability and heatsink versions
Micron said the P310 2280 would be sold through Crucial, select retailers and channel partners. The announcement also said a heatsink version was planned for release in the months after September 2024; it does not confirm that version’s current availability. When shopping, match the listing’s capacity and model number to your device’s clearance and cooling requirements rather than assuming every P310 package is identical.
Who should consider the P310 2280?
- Gen4 desktop users: A suitable option if the system has an M.2 2280 NVMe slot and adequate cooling.
- Gen3 owners: The drive can operate in a compatible Gen3 slot, but the interface will cap throughput below the advertised Gen4 peak.
- Laptop owners: Check length, thickness, thermals and manufacturer support before installation.
- PS5 owners: Verify physical fit, firmware requirements and heatsink compatibility for the exact model.
