Micron’s 6550 ION is a data-center NVMe SSD, not a typical desktop or laptop upgrade. Micron markets it as a 60TB-class drive, but lists its maximum capacity as 61.44TB. Its headline speed figures—up to 14.0 GB/s sequential reads and 7.0 GB/s sequential writes—are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results.
Why a “60TB” SSD is listed as 61.44TB
“60TB” is the product’s capacity class, while 61.44TB is the maximum capacity Micron lists for the 6550 ION. That distinction accounts for the headline’s apparent mismatch: the name uses a rounded class label, not the exact listed maximum. Micron describes the product as “the world’s first 60TB PCIe Gen5 data center SSD”; that “first” claim is Micron’s own wording, not an independently verified market ranking. What the 6550 ION is—and who it is for
The 6550 ION is a PCIe Gen5 NVMe drive aimed at data-center workloads. Micron identifies AI data lakes, high-performance computing (HPC), big data and analytics as intended environments. The capacity and interface do not make it a drop-in replacement for an ordinary PC SSD: the product is built for server deployments, and its E3.S-1T version is a data-center form factor. The published materials do not establish compatibility with a particular consumer motherboard, enclosure, operating system or server platform.
Micron’s published specifications
| Specification | What Micron lists |
|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 61.44TB |
| Sequential read speed | Up to 14.0 GB/s |
| Sequential write speed | Up to 7.0 GB/s |
| Power limit associated with the published speed figures | 20W |
These are Micron’s stated specifications, not results from independent testing. Sequential figures describe large, contiguous data transfers; they do not by themselves predict performance for every application or workload. Micron also publishes comparisons against competing drives, but some comparisons use different maximum power limits—for example, 20W for the 6550 ION and 25W for certain competitors. Treat those comparisons as vendor-reported and method-specific, not as a universal independent efficiency verdict. Micron’s 6550 ION product brief

How the E3.S version packs storage into servers
For the E3.S-1T version, Micron states a 7.5mm z-height and says up to 40 drives can fit in a 2U system. Using Micron’s stated calculation, that configuration represents approximately 2.5PB of capacity. These are the manufacturer’s form-factor and density claims, not independently validated measurements; actual capacity and deployment depend on the drives and server configuration. Is it Micron’s biggest SSD now?
No. Micron’s current data-center SSD portfolio lists the 6600 ION at capacities up to 245TB, making it larger by maximum listed capacity than the 6550 ION. The 6550 remains a 60TB-class product, but it should not be described as Micron’s largest SSD today. Micron’s data-center SSD portfolio

What to check before considering one
This is an enterprise storage product, not a consumer shopping recommendation. The cited materials do not establish a retail price, current marketplace stock or compatibility with any specific server. A deployment decision would require confirming the exact SKU and form factor against the server’s supported drive list, along with workload performance, endurance, power, security and management requirements. Micron’s headline sequential speeds alone are not enough for a like-for-like comparison with other drives.
