Yes. Micron said its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) was sold out for calendar 2024, and its statements later confirmed that 2025 supply was sold out as well. Earlier in 2024, the company had said most of its 2025 supply was allocated; subsequent updates described firmer commitments and pricing. This refers to Micron’s specialized memory for AI and data-center systems—not ordinary consumer RAM.

What did Micron say about its HBM supply?

Micron’s wording became more definitive over time. “Allocated” meant most of the upcoming year’s output had already been committed; later statements said the full calendar-year supply was sold out and pricing had been set or contracted.

When Micron made the statement Calendar year covered Supply status stated Pricing status stated
Early 2024 2024 HBM sold out Not stated
Early 2024 2025 “Overwhelming majority” of supply allocated Not stated
Fiscal Q3 2024 outlook 2024 and 2025 HBM sold out for both years Pricing contracted for the overwhelming majority of 2025 supply
Fiscal Q4 2024 confirmation 2024 and 2025 HBM sold out for both years Pricing determined for the period
2025 market update 2025 Micron said its HBM output for the year was sold out Not stated in this update

The change from “most allocated” to “sold out” for 2025 reflects increasingly firm customer commitments and pricing visibility. Micron also forecast several hundred million dollars of HBM revenue in fiscal 2024 and multiple billions in fiscal 2025; those are company forecasts for fiscal years, not calendar-year sales totals.

What “sold out” means—and what it does not

In this context, “sold out” means Micron’s available HBM production for the stated calendar period was committed or allocated to customers. It does not mean that all HBM made by every supplier had disappeared from the market, or that shops had run out of regular DRAM for PCs.

HBM is a specialized component used in accelerator platforms for demanding AI and data-center workloads. It is not a standard DIMM that a PC owner buys and installs. Micron’s statement therefore describes its production commitments in a business-to-business supply chain, not consumer retail availability.

Which HBM products were involved?

Micron’s 2024 Form 10-K describes HBM within its Compute and Networking Business Unit portfolio, alongside DDR5, LPDRAM and GDDR. It reports volume production of 8-high 24GB HBM3E in 2024 and shipments of production-capable 12-high 36GB HBM3E units for qualification across the AI ecosystem.

The filing does not identify which specific product units were allocated to which customers. Its product milestones provide context for Micron’s HBM business, but they should not be read as a customer-by-customer allocation list.

Why was demand so strong?

Micron linked HBM demand to cloud and enterprise AI servers. These systems handle increasingly memory-intensive workloads, which require large amounts of DRAM and can use HBM as part of an accelerator platform. The supply announcements reflected customer demand for this specialized component; they do not, by themselves, establish how many AI GPUs were built or shipped.

For scale, Micron reported $17.60 billion in total DRAM revenue in 2024 and $9.51 billion in 2024 revenue for its Compute and Networking Business Unit. Neither figure is HBM-only revenue: the first covers DRAM overall, while the second covers a business unit with multiple products.

How should Micron’s revenue and market-size figures be read?

Micron forecast several hundred million dollars of HBM revenue for fiscal 2024 and multiple billions for fiscal 2025 in its statements. In a later 2025 update, it estimated the calendar-2025 HBM total addressable market at more than $35 billion. That is Micron’s estimate of the market opportunity, not Micron’s own revenue or a reported amount of HBM sales.
