LPCAMM2 is a removable LPDDR5X memory module—not a SODIMM replacement that fits a standard SODIMM slot. It gives laptop makers a way to offer upgradeable, low-power memory in systems designed specifically for LPCAMM2. When ServeTheHome reported on the format on May 8, 2024, it identified the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 as the first compatible laptop then available and described initial 32GB and 64GB capacities. Those are dated examples, not a complete current compatibility list.
What LPCAMM2 is
LPCAMM2 combines LPDDR5X memory with a removable module format. Unlike LPDDR5X soldered directly to a laptop’s motherboard, the module can be removed and upgraded—but only in a laptop built to support LPCAMM2. Micron says one LPCAMM2 module supports dual-channel memory. The format’s physical and electrical design differs from SODIMM, so it cannot be installed in an ordinary SODIMM socket. Micron’s LPCAMM2 product page and ServeTheHome’s May 2024 report describe the modular design and its distinction from SODIMM.
How fast and how much capacity?
Published transfer-rate figures have changed across announcements and product materials. They refer to different dates and contexts, not a guarantee that every LPCAMM2 module or laptop will run at the highest listed rate.
| Source and date | Published LPCAMM2 figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| ServeTheHome, May 8, 2024 | Up to 7,500 MT/s; 32GB and 64GB capacities | First-generation report, with the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 as the first compatible laptop then available. Source |
| Micron, May 7, 2024 | Up to 7,500 MT/s; 32GB and 64GB Crucial modules | Micron’s 2024 Crucial LPCAMM2 announcement. Source |
| Micron, September 30, 2025 | Up to 8,533 MT/s; capacities up to 64GB | Micron’s later Crucial LPCAMM2 announcement. Source |
| Micron product page, currently viewed | Up to 9,600 Mb/s | A product-page capability statement; it does not establish the speed supported by every module or laptop. Source |
Keep the units as Micron presents them: the product page says Mb/s, while the dated announcements use MT/s. A larger headline rate alone does not establish a proportional improvement in every application; the laptop’s supported configuration and workload matter.

Can LPCAMM2 replace SODIMM RAM?
It can serve as an alternative to soldered memory or SODIMM in a laptop designed around LPCAMM2, but it is not a drop-in SODIMM replacement. The module requires a compatible LPCAMM2 connector and system design. Before buying, confirm that the laptop maker explicitly supports LPCAMM2 for the exact model and configuration; an available SODIMM slot does not imply LPCAMM2 compatibility.
Which laptops support LPCAMM2?
The compatibility examples in the dated announcements are not an exhaustive or current list. ServeTheHome’s May 2024 report named the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 as the first compatible laptop then available. Micron’s September 2025 announcement referred to select Lenovo and Dell next-generation mobile workstations. Neither statement means that every configuration of those brands or product families accepts every LPCAMM2 module.

- Power: Micron reports up to 61% lower active power and up to 80% lower system standby power versus DDR5 SODIMM. Its footnote describes measurements in milliwatts per 64-bit bus at the same LPDDR5X speed as SODIMM.
Micron also reported performance comparisons in its January 9, 2024 announcement: up to 71% better PCMark 10 essentials workload performance, up to 7% better digital-content-creation performance, and up to 15% better productivity performance. These are Micron-reported benchmark results, not independent findings established here. The announcement provides the vendor’s claims and context at Micron’s January 2024 release.
Can you upgrade a ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 to 64GB?
ServeTheHome’s May 2024 report identified 32GB and 64GB as first-generation LPCAMM2 capacities and named the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 as the first compatible laptop then available. That historical report does not by itself verify the memory configuration, supported module, or upgrade procedure for every ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 configuration. Check Lenovo’s documentation for your exact machine and confirm the module’s capacity and supported rate before purchasing. Do not assume that a 64GB module is compatible merely because both the laptop and module use LPCAMM2.

What to check before buying
- Find the exact laptop model and configuration. Use the manufacturer’s system specifications or service documentation, not just a family name or a retailer’s general compatibility claim.
- Confirm LPCAMM2 support. The system must explicitly support this module format; a standard SODIMM socket is not compatible.
- Verify capacity and rate. Match the module to the laptop maker’s supported capacity and transfer rate. Published maximums vary by module and date.
- Check the upgrade path. Confirm how the module is installed and whether the laptop configuration permits the intended upgrade.
Micron’s vendor statements also include attributed predictions about the format’s role: in January 2024, Micron vice president Praveen Vaidyanathan described LPCAMM2 as a modular form intended to deliver performance per watt, while Lenovo executive Yasumichi Tsukamoto said the format could enable scalable memory capacity in mobile workstations and thin-and-light laptops. In September 2025, Micron product-marketing senior director Jonathan Weech said customers were seeking upgradeable memory for AI workloads and multitasking. These are company statements, not independent evidence of outcomes in every system. The remarks appear in Micron’s January 2024 release and its September 2025 release.
