Micron’s HBM3E specification of more than 1.2 TB/s describes bandwidth from a memory stack, not the total bandwidth of an entire GPU or server. Micron announced volume production of its 24GB 8-high HBM3E in February 2024; its current product information says that configuration ships with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs, while its 36GB 12-high version is production-capable and has shipped to partners for qualification. Those milestones establish product and supply status, but do not disclose a current production-ramp rate or an independent measure of AI-demand growth.
What is Micron HBM3E?
HBM3E is Micron’s high-bandwidth memory designed for use close to processors such as AI accelerators and high-performance computing (HPC) chips. Its purpose is to supply data to processors that can work on many operations in parallel. Micron’s product page lists two stack configurations: 24GB at 8-high and 36GB at 12-high.

HBM has a different role from the other memory and storage in an AI system. Micron positions HBM as accelerator memory; DRAM serves as general system working memory, while SSDs hold retained data such as datasets and checkpoints. These components complement one another rather than making HBM a replacement for system memory or storage.

Micron specifies more than 1.2 terabytes per second (TB/s) of bandwidth per placement for both its 8-high and 12-high HBM3E solutions. The product page also lists pin speed above 9.2 gigabits per second (Gb/s) and 1,024 I/O pins. In practical terms, the figure describes the memory stack’s data-transfer capability; it is not a claim that a complete GPU, accelerator board, or server delivers exactly 1.2 TB/s overall.

- Virtual Super Resolution (VSR)

That distinction matters when comparing system specifications. A stack-level memory figure describes one part of an accelerator’s memory subsystem. It should not be read as a whole-system performance result or as a measure of how quickly every AI workload will run.
How much memory does an HBM3E stack have?
Micron lists 24GB for its 8-high stack and 36GB for its 12-high stack. The 12-high configuration therefore offers 12GB more capacity, while Micron gives both configurations the same stated bandwidth threshold: more than 1.2 TB/s per placement.
| Micron HBM3E configuration | Stack height | Capacity | Stated bandwidth | Documented status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8-high | 8-high | 24GB | More than 1.2 TB/s per placement | Micron says it is shipping with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs. |
| 12-high | 12-high | 36GB | More than 1.2 TB/s per placement | Micron describes it as production-capable; its blog says units shipped to partners for qualification. |
Is Micron HBM3E in production?
8-high: volume production announced in 2024
On February 26, 2024, Micron announced that it had begun volume production of its 24GB 8-high HBM3E. At that time, the company said integration with NVIDIA’s H200 platform was planned for the second calendar quarter of 2024. Micron’s current HBM3E product page now says the 8-high product is shipping with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs. The dated announcement and the current shipping statement describe different points in the product’s timeline.

Micron describes its 36GB 12-high HBM3E as production-capable. A Micron blog says production-capable units shipped to partners for qualification. Qualification is a step in validating a component for partner systems; those statements do not establish a particular current shipment volume, yield, or production-ramp speed.
Consequently, “kicks into high gear” is not a quantified production finding in the available company disclosures. They establish the 2024 volume-production announcement for 8-high HBM3E, current stated H200 shipping, and qualification activity for 12-high. They do not give a current ramp rate or yield figure.
Why does HBM3E matter for AI accelerators?
AI accelerators perform large numbers of calculations, often in parallel, and need a steady flow of data to keep those operations supplied. HBM’s combination of high bandwidth and stack capacity is intended to address that memory demand near the processor. It is one part of a larger system that also uses general-purpose DRAM and storage.
Micron says its HBM3E uses about 30% less power than competitive offerings. That is a company comparison, not an independently established result in the cited product information; the material does not provide an independent test or a complete comparison methodology. Micron executive vice president and chief business officer Sumit Sadana described AI workloads as heavily reliant on memory bandwidth and capacity and characterized Micron as well-positioned for AI growth. That is the company’s view of the market, not an independent growth statistic.

How does HBM3E compare with Micron HBM4?
Micron’s current roadmap places HBM3E before HBM4. At the 12-high capacity level, Micron lists 36GB for both generations, but its stated bandwidth figures differ: more than 1.2 TB/s per placement for HBM3E and more than 2.8 TB/s per stack for HBM4. Micron says 12-high HBM4 retains 36GB while providing more than twice the bandwidth of the previous generation.
| Generation and configuration | Capacity | Micron-stated bandwidth |
|---|---|---|
| HBM3E, 12-high | 36GB | More than 1.2 TB/s per placement |
| HBM4, 12-high | 36GB | More than 2.8 TB/s per stack |
These are Micron product specifications, not a workload benchmark. The comparison shows the bandwidth and capacity figures Micron publishes for these stack configurations; by itself, it does not establish how much faster a complete accelerator or application will be.
What the production and demand claims establish
Micron’s disclosures support a specific account: the company announced 8-high HBM3E volume production in February 2024, now says that product ships with H200 GPUs, and describes 12-high as production-capable with partner qualification underway in its blog. Its published figures give both HBM3E configurations more than 1.2 TB/s per placement, with 24GB and 36GB capacities respectively.
They do not quantify Micron’s present HBM3E production ramp or independently measure how quickly AI demand is growing. The headline’s “demand skyrockets” language is therefore a framing of the business story, not a measured growth rate established by these product and company announcements.
