Micron announced customer sampling of a 256GB LPDDR5X SOCAMM2 module on March 3, 2026, positioning it as low-power, CPU-attached memory for data-center AI and high-performance computing—not as a standard PC RAM upgrade. Micron attributes the module’s capacity to an industry-first monolithic 32Gb LPDDR5X design. Its performance and efficiency figures are company claims tied to specific comparisons and workloads.
What is Micron’s 256GB SOCAMM2?
SOCAMM2 is a modular low-power DRAM product for server platforms. Micron’s product page presents it for data-center AI systems, while its announcement also identifies high-performance computing (HPC) as a target. It is not a generic consumer memory module: the available sources do not establish compatibility with ordinary desktop DIMM slots or universal support across servers. Micron’s SOCAMM2 product page
The announced 256GB capacity uses a monolithic 32Gb LPDDR5X design, according to Micron. The company says that capacity can enable up to 2TB of LPDRAM on an eight-channel server CPU. That is a configuration claim, not a guarantee that every eight-channel system supports the module count or capacity. Micron’s March 3, 2026 announcement
Why Micron is targeting AI and HPC
Micron’s central case is combining high memory capacity with lower power use and physical footprint in CPU-attached memory configurations. For AI inference, the company says moving key-value (KV) cache from high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to higher-capacity LPDDR can improve time to first token for long-context large language model workloads. HPC is another target: Micron cites a comparison involving its Pot3D solar-physics code.

These claims address particular server designs and workloads. They do not show that LPDDR5X SOCAMM2 replaces HBM in all AI systems, or that it outperforms DDR5 in every server application.

Sampling, production, and availability
Micron said it was shipping customer samples on March 3, 2026. In its subsequent fiscal 2026 third-quarter update, the company reported that LPDDR5X SOCAMM2 products were in high-volume production and that it had expanded the portfolio across multiple capacities. In June 2026, Micron described itself as the only provider of a 256GB SOCAMM2. Both production and provider statements are Micron’s, and the latter is a time-sensitive company claim; none establishes that every capacity is available to every buyer or qualified for every server. What a server buyer should check
For a platform evaluation, compare the module with alternatives on capacity per module and per CPU, power use, physical footprint, workload-specific performance, and platform qualification. Confirm SOCAMM2 form-factor support and the exact supported capacity with the server or system vendor; the Micron materials do not establish universal DIMM-slot compatibility. Availability should also be confirmed for the specific capacity and qualified system rather than inferred from the company’s high-volume-production statement.
