The Micron 9550 is an enterprise PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD with a manufacturer-rated sequential read speed of up to 14,000 MB/s (14 GB/s) and sequential write speed of up to 10,000 MB/s. Micron called it the “world’s fastest data center SSD” when it announced the drive on July 23, 2024; that is a dated company claim, not proof of a current, independently verified market-wide ranking.
What does 14 GB/s mean?
Micron’s technical specification gives the 9550 a sequential 128 KB read performance of up to 14,000 MB/s. The number describes a specific large-block sequential workload, not a speed the SSD will sustain for every application, file size, or mix of reads and writes. The same specification lists sequential writes of up to 10,000 MB/s.

These are manufacturer-published maximum specifications, not independent benchmark results. Actual results depend on the workload and the system in which the SSD is installed. Micron’s specification is revision A, dated February 2025, and notes that specifications may change without notice. Read Micron’s 9550 technical product specification.

Micron used “the world’s fastest data center SSD” in its July 23, 2024 announcement. It also claimed up to 67% better performance than similar competitive SSDs on its product page and in the announcement. The materials cited here do not establish a matched competitor configuration or an independent reproduction of that comparison, so neither statement should be treated as a current, universal ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- Micron 9550 PRO 3840GB NVMe E3.S SSD
Micron’s current SSD catalog includes the 9650, described as its first PCIe Gen6 data-center SSD. That later product is a reason not to present the 9550 as the current fastest SSD without fresh, comparable evidence; the existence of a newer generation alone does not establish a direct performance ranking. Micron’s July 2024 launch announcement and Micron’s current SSD catalog.
What kind of SSD is the Micron 9550?
The 9550 is a data-center NVMe drive built for enterprise systems, not a standard M.2 consumer SSD. Micron lists U.2, E1.S, and E3.S 1T form factors. Buyers need to match the drive’s form factor and interface to a supported server or storage platform; it should not be assumed to fit or work as a drop-in desktop upgrade.

- Storage Capacity: 3.84 TB
- Maximum Read Transfer Rate: 5000 MB/s
- Maximum Write Transfer Rate: 2500 MB/s
- Random 4KB Read: 735000IOPS
- Random 4KB Write: 160000IOPS
The specification lists PCIe Gen5, NVMe 2.0b, compliance with the OCP Datacenter NVMe SSD Specification 2.0, and OCP 2.5 telemetry features. Micron offers two product lines and these capacities:

| Product line | Listed capacities |
|---|---|
| 9550 PRO | 3.84, 7.68, 15.36, and 30.72 TB |
| 9550 MAX | 3.2, 6.4, 12.8, and 25.6 TB |
Capacity and product line matter when evaluating a specific configuration. These capacity listings do not by themselves establish equivalent endurance or performance for every model. Consult the Micron 9550 product page and technical specification for the configuration being considered.

- Micron 9550 PRO 15360GB NVMe E3.S SSD
What workloads and systems is it designed for?
Micron positions the 9550 for AI infrastructure, performance-focused databases, caching, online transaction processing (OLTP), and high-frequency trading. Its specification lists up to 3,300 KIOPS for random 4 KB reads and up to 720 KIOPS for random 4 KB writes. Those figures are also manufacturer specifications, not a promise of the same results in a particular server or application.
There is a specific AI infrastructure qualification example: Micron announced on October 23, 2024, that its SSDs, including the 9550 PCIe Gen5 drive, were qualified for the recommended vendor list on NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 systems. That announcement does not mean every 9550 capacity or form factor is compatible with every server. Micron’s GB200 NVL72 qualification announcement.

What should a data-center buyer compare?
A single sequential-read maximum is not enough to choose an enterprise SSD. For a meaningful comparison with another drive, check that the products are being evaluated on comparable terms:
- Interface and generation: Compare PCIe generation and interface, and confirm the server supports the selected form factor.
- Workload: Distinguish large-block sequential throughput from small-block random I/O, and compare the same read/write mix.
- Configuration: Match capacity and product class, including PRO versus MAX, rather than comparing headline figures from unlike models.
- Operational needs: Consider latency, endurance, and power efficiency alongside peak throughput.
- Evidence: Look for results from a comparable test methodology and system configuration; do not infer a competitor ranking from Micron’s published maximums alone.
Micron’s product page also lists security capabilities including SPDM 1.2, SHA-512, RSA standards, and its Secure Execution Environment. Whether those capabilities meet a deployment’s security and management requirements should be checked against the intended platform and configuration. Micron’s 9550 product details.
