A meteorite from Antarctica contains ancient mineral grains that preserve evidence of a strong magnetic field in the young solar system. Researchers estimate the field at about 150–600 microteslas, suggesting magnetism may have helped move gas and material through the disk around the newborn Sun—alongside gravity, not instead of it.

What scientists found in the meteorite

A team led by Cauê Borlina examined calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) in DOM 08006, a meteorite recovered in Antarctica. Purdue describes the meteorite as having undergone little alteration, an important feature because water, heat, collisions and other processes can disturb the magnetic record preserved in a rock. Purdue University’s report describes the team’s estimate of a magnetic field about 150–600 microteslas—roughly three to twelve times the strength of Earth’s present field.

The signal is associated with material formed roughly within the solar system’s first 20,000–200,000 years. That is an approximate interval reported by Purdue, not a precise timestamp for every grain or a universal measurement of the young solar system’s field.

How can a meteorite preserve a record of the early solar system?

A meteorite is a space rock that survives its passage through an atmosphere and reaches the ground, according to NASA. Some meteorites preserve primitive material from the early solar system. CAIs are among the earliest solids to form, and some contain minerals capable of retaining remanent magnetization: a record of the magnetic field present when the grains formed.

The researchers infer the ancient field from magnetic minerals in CAIs preserved inside DOM 08006. The meteorite is therefore a physical archive, not a direct observation of the solar nebula as it existed billions of years ago. Its value depends on how well the sample escaped later changes that could overwrite or disturb that archive.

Why a magnetic field matters to planet formation

As the Sun formed, a cloud of gas and dust collapsed and flattened into a disk. Material in that disk eventually contributed to the Sun and the planets. The CAIs’ magnetic record gives scientists a physical constraint for models of how gas and other material moved through the disk.

The study’s interpretation is that magnetism likely helped transport material in this very early phase. It adds evidence to a debate about the disk before planets were forming; it does not prove that magnetic forces alone formed the Sun or planets. As Borlina put it, “Gravity is also playing a role. But we are now showing that, if you want to fully understand how the Sun and planets formed, you should include magnetic fields in the ingredients that make them.”

Benjamin Weiss, Robert R. Shrock Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at MIT, said: “It has long been theorized that gravity caused this, but our measurements show magnetism likely played a role, possibly even a dominant one.” The statement describes the researchers’ interpretation of their measurements, not a finding that gravity is unnecessary.

What the finding does—and does not—establish

  • It provides: a magnetic-field estimate inferred from ancient minerals in a relatively unaltered meteorite, offering a constraint for models of the early disk.
  • It suggests: magnetism may have helped move material as the young solar system developed.
  • It does not show: a direct view of the ancient disk, that every part of the disk had the same field, or that magnetism replaced gravity.
  • It depends on preservation: later heating, water, impacts and parent-body processes can alter meteorites and disturb older signals, so the sample’s history matters.

The study was reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Purdue’s account provides the field and timing estimates, while MIT’s report also describes the finding and its relevance to the early disk.
