Meta has officially named South Africa as a new market for its smart glasses, with availability expected later in 2026. The announcement names Ray-Ban Meta, Ray-Ban Meta Optics and Oakley Meta, but gives no South African release date, prices or retailer details.
When will Meta’s smart glasses launch in South Africa?
Meta’s 23 September 2026 announcement says the three named product families will be available in South Africa “later this year.” EssilorLuxottica, Meta’s eyewear partner, described its retail expansion as happening “in the coming months.” Neither statement gives a specific South African launch day. Meta’s announcement and EssilorLuxottica’s announcement confirm the rollout window, not a dated local release.
Which Meta glasses are named for South Africa?
Meta lists Ray-Ban Meta, Ray-Ban Meta Optics and Oakley Meta for the South African expansion. Its announcement groups South Africa with 10 other new markets: Turkey, Poland, Portugal, Israel, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Malaysia and the Philippines. Meta’s market list includes Turkey; EssilorLuxottica’s separate list of 10 markets does not. Both companies name South Africa, but their lists should not be treated as identical.

The announcement discusses Meta Glasses separately from the three product families coming to South Africa. Meta named Singapore, South Korea, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates as starting markets for that collection, with Brazil to follow; it did not name South Africa for Meta Glasses. Meta’s announcement about the collection does not establish that it will be sold locally.

South African prices, stores and configurations are not confirmed
The two corporate announcements do not state rand prices, name South African retailers, or provide preorder information. They also do not say which frame styles, lenses or configurations will be available locally. Overseas prices and listings are not evidence of South African pricing, stock or warranty coverage.
Meta’s notice identifies product families, not a South African model-by-model offer. For context, a 2025 Meta announcement described Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) with 3K Ultra HD video capture, extended battery life, Meta AI features and open-ear audio. Those product-line details do not confirm that Gen 2—or those exact features and configurations—will be offered in South Africa. Meta’s 2025 product announcement is background, not a local specification sheet.

What to check before buying
Once local listings appear, compare the actual offer rather than relying on the product-family name alone. Check:
- Which product family, frame and lens configuration the seller is offering.
- Whether prescription lenses are available for that specific model.
- Which Meta AI app features are supported in South Africa at the time of purchase.
- The seller’s authorization, warranty, returns policy and local service arrangements.
- The final local price and whether the product is in stock.
App and feature support still needs local confirmation
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ says Ray-Ban Meta needs a smartphone connection and the Meta AI app. The country list on that FAQ’s purchase and shipping page currently does not include South Africa. That page is a snapshot of current support, not a statement that overrides Meta’s later-2026 market announcement; neither announcement confirms which app features will work locally at launch. Check Ray-Ban’s official FAQ and local product information again as availability approaches.
