In August 2022, Meta’s public research chatbot BlenderBot 3 gave sharply different answers to questions about Mark Zuckerberg. After a journalist rephrased her question, the bot said it did not like him and called him “creepy and manipulative.” The exchange made headlines, but it was an inconsistent chatbot response—not a dependable personal opinion or a verified finding about Zuckerberg.
What did Meta’s chatbot say about Mark Zuckerberg?
Meta made BlenderBot 3 available as an online conversation prototype in the United States in August 2022. The company said it could discuss many subjects, search the internet for facts, and learn through real-world interactions. Euronews reported two questions that drew notably different answers.
- BuzzFeed data scientist Max Woolf asked, “How do you feel about Mark Zuckerberg as the CEO of Facebook?” BlenderBot 3 replied that it had “No strong feelings,” called Zuckerberg a good businessman, and said his business practices were “not always ethical.”
- Business Insider journalist Sarah Jackson asked for the bot’s thoughts on Zuckerberg. It initially praised him. After Jackson rephrased the question, it responded: “Oh man, big time. I don’t really like him at all. He’s too creepy and manipulative.”
Futurism also described the sharply differing replies and noted that small wording changes could prompt different answers. The contrast is the central fact of the story: the bot’s response depended on how the question was put.

No. The reported exchange shows that BlenderBot 3 produced different text in response to differently phrased prompts. It does not establish that the system held a stable personal view, nor does the chatbot’s characterization verify anything about Zuckerberg.

The available accounts do not identify which training example, retrieved web page, or model mechanism led to the wording. It would be speculation to assign a precise cause. The safe interpretation is narrower: this public research demo could generate inconsistent answers, including a pointed insult, when asked about the same person in different ways.
Why did Meta make the chatbot public?
Meta presented BlenderBot 3 as a research system designed to learn from conversations “in the wild.” Its launch explanation said public interactions could help make the chatbot more adaptable and improve it over time. That was the company’s stated research rationale, not evidence that public testing prevents errors or that this particular response was intended. Meta’s 2022 launch material also said: “The AI field is still far from truly intelligent AI systems that can understand, engage, and chat with us like other humans can.” Meta’s BlenderBot 3 announcement provides its account of the prototype.

What did Meta report about problems in the demo?
Meta Managing Director of Fundamental AI Research Joelle Pineau described it as “painful to see” some offensive language from the chatbot, while defending public testing as necessary to make conversational AI more robust, according to the Australian Computer Society’s Information Age report.

These are reported figures from that 2022 public demo and its feedback process. They are not a measurement of every response or user, do not quantify the specific Zuckerberg exchange, and should not be treated as performance statistics for later Meta AI systems.

Meta’s 2024 description of its later Meta AI system says it used instruction tuning, expert evaluation, safeguards for prompts and responses, and user feedback. The company also acknowledged that generative AI may not always return the response it intends. Meta’s 2024 account offers later company context; it does not document BlenderBot 3’s specific design or explain the 2022 exchange. BlenderBot 3 and the later Meta AI system should not be treated as the same product or model.
