Astatine has not been characterized as a weighable bulk sample, but a 2013 theoretical study predicted that condensed astatine could be a monatomic metal at 1 atm and might be superconducting. That is a calculation about a hypothetical condensed phase—not an experimental report that a bulk piece of astatine has been made and tested.
What metallic behavior was predicted?
In their 2013 paper, Condensed astatine: monatomic and metallic, Andreas Hermann, Roald Hoffmann, and N. W. Ashcroft used density-functional theory and structural-selection methods to examine astatine in a condensed state. Their abstract says: “Condensed astatine is predicted to be quite different in fascinating ways from iodine, being already at 1 atm a metal, and monatomic at that, and possibly a superconductor (as is dense iodine).” The PubMed-indexed abstract presents this as a theoretical prediction.
- Metallic: The authors predicted metallic behavior at 1 atm, not a metal experimentally confirmed under ordinary conditions.
- Monatomic: The predicted condensed form would be monatomic rather than made of the paired molecules associated with solid iodine.
- Possibly superconducting: The paper describes superconductivity as a possibility, not a demonstrated property.
The accessible abstract does not identify a specific crystal lattice, so a particular structure cannot be assigned from it.
Why does the prediction include relativistic physics?
Astatine is a very heavy element, so relativistic effects—the changes in electron behavior that become important at high atomic number—matter to calculations of its properties. Hermann, Hoffmann, and Ashcroft explicitly included relativistic physics in their density-functional and structural-selection analysis. The result is therefore a prediction based on a model that accounts for those effects, rather than a simple extrapolation from iodine.

Why is there no direct bulk test?
Astatine is dangerously radioactive, and only tiny quantities have ever been produced; the Royal Society of Chemistry says it has not been obtained in weighable amounts. Its most stable isotopes have half-lives on the order of hours: the RSC element entry lists about 8.1 hours for At-210 and 7.21 hours for At-211. These constraints make ordinary bulk-material preparation and characterization exceptionally difficult. Royal Society of Chemistry: Astatine — Element information, properties and uses.
Does measured electron affinity prove astatine is a metal?
No. A 2020 study measured astatine’s atomic electron affinity, a property of an isolated atom that describes the energy change when it gains an electron. The authors reported a measured value of 2.41578(7) eV and a relativistic theoretical value of 2.414(16) eV. Agreement between those values supports the atomic-property measurement and calculation; it does not establish electrical conductivity or a crystal structure for bulk astatine. The study is available in Nature Communications via PubMed Central.

Is astatine a halogen, a metalloid, or a metal?
The answer depends on what property and context the label describes. Astatine occupies the halogen family position, and mass spectrometry has confirmed that its chemical behavior resembles other halogens, particularly iodine, according to the RSC. The metallic prediction concerns a hypothetical condensed elemental phase. Those claims address different evidence and are not inherently contradictory.

It is clearest to specify the sense being used: astatine is a halogen by periodic-table family, while its condensed-phase metallic character is a theoretical prediction. What can be stated confidently?
- A 2013 calculation predicts monatomic metallic astatine at 1 atm and says it might be superconducting.
- The prediction accounts for relativistic physics, which is important for this heavy element.
- It is not a direct observation of a bulk astatine sample, and the cited abstract does not specify a crystal lattice.
- Measured atomic electron affinity and halogen-like chemical behavior do not by themselves confirm metallic conductivity in condensed astatine.
