Neither metal roofing nor asphalt shingles are universally more hail resistant. The meaningful comparison is between specific roof products and installed systems: their profile and construction, the test method and rating, the kind of damage that matters, and the roof deck and installation. A laboratory rating is useful evidence, not a guarantee against damage or an automatic insurance discount.
Is a metal roof better than shingles in hail?
There is no established, product-by-product independent ranking here that proves metal panels always outperform asphalt shingles, or that a Class 4 shingle matches a metal roof. “Metal” and “asphalt” each cover products with different constructions and performance. A metal panel can be dented; an asphalt shingle can suffer granule loss, tearing or other damage. Cosmetic dents and damage that compromises weather protection are also different outcomes, and the available evidence does not establish comparative rates for those outcomes across the two broad material categories.
Compare the exact product and profile, the test and rating attached to it, the roof’s substructure and installation requirements, warranty exclusions, and your insurer’s rules. The Metal Roofing Alliance’s hail guidance highlights dent resistance, substructure and installation considerations in hail-prone areas. Its general guidance that many quality metal roofing manufacturers offer UL 2218 Class 4-compliant products does not establish that every metal roof has that rating or performs alike.
What hail-resistance ratings and tests mean
UL 2218: a steel-ball impact classification
The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association describes UL 2218 as a controlled laboratory test in which steel balls are dropped from different heights and the roof product is inspected for damage. The method has four impact classes, with Class 4 the highest. See ARMA’s 2025 technical bulletin for its description of the standard.

For examples of the method, GAF says its Class 3 example uses a 1.75-inch steel ball dropped from 17 feet, while its Class 4 example uses a 2-inch ball dropped from 20 feet. These are GAF’s descriptions of the test examples, not a prediction of how every real hailstorm will affect a roof. Look for the applicable classification statement on the product packaging rather than assuming a product is rated based on its material or marketing language. GAF explains the classification and its limits on its impact-resistant materials page.
IBHS: a relative comparison protocol for asphalt shingles
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) uses laboratory-manufactured hailstones to compare asphalt shingle performance. Its current overview describes tests using 1.5-inch and 2.0-inch hailstones and assessment of dents, tears and granule loss. Those projectile sizes describe the laboratory method; they are not universal thresholds for damaging natural hail.
IBHS says its protocol is structured to distinguish relative performance and assess these damage modes rather than award a pass/fail rating. Its overview also reports a historical tested sample of 22 asphalt shingle products from five manufacturers in 2013–2014; that sample is not a census of products currently on the market. Read the protocol and current testing overview for the method and scope.

IBHS cautions that its protocol does not exactly recreate natural hail impacts and is not intended for insurance or legal claims handling, product warranties, or legal standards. Its results can help compare tested asphalt shingles under a defined procedure, but they are not a substitute for a product’s specific rating, warranty terms or an insurer’s decision.
FM 4473 is a different test
ARMA describes FM 4473 as a test for rigid roofing materials that uses freezer ice balls launched pneumatically. That differs from UL 2218’s dropped-steel-ball method. A rating or result from one method should not be treated as directly interchangeable with a result from another; confirm the test method and exact product before comparing claims.
Does hail dent a metal roof?
It can. Dent resistance depends on the specific metal roofing system, including its material construction and profile, as well as the roof support and installation. A visible dent is not automatically evidence that the roof has lost weather protection, but appearance may matter to the homeowner. The supplied sources do not establish a universal dent threshold or a comparative rate of cosmetic versus functional damage for metal roofs and asphalt shingles.

Can Class 4 shingles prevent hail damage?
No rating should be read as a promise that a roof will avoid damage in every real hail event. UL 2218 Class 4 is the highest class within that test method, not a guarantee of hail-proof performance. Real storms and installed roofs do not reproduce a controlled laboratory test exactly.
One named asphalt option illustrates why buyers should verify both the product claim and its limits: GAF says Timberline AS II passes UL 2218 Class 4 testing. That is a manufacturer statement, not an independent comparison against named metal roofing models. GAF also says hail damage is not covered by its limited warranty. Check the current product documentation and warranty for the exact product and region before relying on the claim.
Will a Class 4 roof lower your insurance premium?
Not necessarily. GAF says any insurance discounts depend on the state and insurance company and are not guaranteed. A product rating alone does not determine whether a carrier offers a discount or how it handles a later claim. Before choosing a roof, ask your actual insurer which products, documentation and installation requirements qualify in your location, and whether any discount applies to the specific roof you are considering.
Quick Recap
How to compare roof options before replacing yours
- Get the exact product names and profiles. Ask for the manufacturer, product line and configuration, not just “metal roof” or “impact-resistant shingles.”
- Request the applicable test evidence. Confirm whether the claim refers to UL 2218, IBHS testing or another method, and verify the rating or test applies to that precise product. For UL 2218, check the classification statement on the packaging or product documentation.
- Clarify the damage outcome you care about. Ask how the evidence relates to dents, tears, granule loss and weather protection. These are not interchangeable measures of damage.
- Review the installed system. Ask how the roof deck or substructure, profile and installation instructions affect the proposed assembly. Check local code requirements and use an installer qualified for that system.
- Read the warranty exclusions. Determine whether hail damage is excluded and what the warranty does and does not cover.
- Confirm insurance treatment directly. Provide the insurer with the exact product and installation details before purchase; do not assume a rating guarantees a premium reduction.
