Meta is not abandoning virtual reality. Its 2026 plan separates the Quest VR platform from Horizon Worlds: Quest continues to prioritize third-party VR apps, games and developers, while Worlds shifts to an almost exclusively mobile experience. Meta’s announced deadline for Worlds access through Quest was June 15, 2026, so that transition date has already passed. The current app and account experience should be checked directly with Meta.
What Meta actually changed
Meta says it is running two different strategies rather than shutting down Quest VR. Quest remains the company’s platform for standalone virtual-reality applications and games. Horizon Worlds is being treated as a separate social and creation platform whose main distribution channel is now mobile.
In its 2026 developer announcement, Meta described the split as giving both products “more space” to grow. Samantha Ryan, Meta’s vice president of Content for Reality Labs, said the company was “doubling down on the VR developer ecosystem” while shifting Worlds “to be almost exclusively mobile.”

Is Meta giving up on VR?
No. Meta says its roadmap for future VR headsets remains robust and that investment in Quest and VR games remains high. In its GDC 2026 account, the company said Quest usage reached its highest level to date in 2025. It also reported slightly higher year-over-year Store developer revenue and more than 10% growth in in-app-purchase revenue.

Those are Meta’s own figures, not independent measurements. They show the company’s stated priorities and reported activity, but they do not prove how large future VR demand will be or whether Meta’s strategy will succeed.
Meta-reported Quest ecosystem figures
- In-app purchases on Quest increased 13% in 2025.
- More than 100 Quest titles generated at least $1 million in gross revenue during 2025.
- Across first- and third-party apps, 86% of effective headset time was spent in third-party apps.
Meta uses those results to support a developer-led Quest strategy: the company wants more independent studios to build, distribute and monetize VR software instead of relying on Worlds as the main social showcase for the headset.
Why Horizon Worlds is leaving the Quest Store
Meta cited both developer feedback and internal experiments. At GDC 2026, it said developers disliked seeing Worlds placed in the Quest Store. Meta also said its data did not show that the Store placement improved device retention and that the effect on app revenue was small.

These are explanations from Meta, not an independent finding that mobile Worlds will perform better. The company’s decision means Worlds can be optimized for mobile creation and social games while the Quest Store can concentrate on dedicated VR software.
What happened to Horizon Worlds on Quest
Meta’s March 2026 transition notice set out this schedule:
- March 31, 2026: Horizon Worlds and Events stopped appearing in the Quest Store under the announced plan.
- Before the final cutoff: Some individual worlds became unavailable in VR.
- After June 15, 2026: Meta said remaining access through the Quest Horizon Worlds app would end and that Worlds would be available through the Meta Horizon mobile app.
Because both dates are now in the past, a Quest owner should not assume that an old installation still provides access. Meta’s transition notice specifically said: “Standalone VR apps for Quest will not be impacted by this change.” That protects the distinction between Worlds and other Quest software; it does not promise continued VR access to Worlds itself.

Can you still use a Meta Quest headset?
Yes. This change does not shut down Quest hardware or the standalone VR apps installed through the Quest platform. You can continue using supported VR games and applications, subject to each app’s own compatibility, online-service and account requirements.

What mobile Horizon Worlds means for users
Device and format
Mobile Worlds does not require a Quest headset. The experience is delivered through Meta’s Horizon mobile app, so participation is based on a compatible mobile device and Meta account rather than VR hardware.

Worlds and social games
Meta says it is investing in mobile creation tools and social games. That points to a Worlds experience designed for a larger mobile audience, with creation and play built around phones rather than six-degrees-of-freedom headsets.
What is not established yet
Meta has not established that mobile Worlds will produce better retention, revenue or creator earnings than its former Quest distribution. The company’s announcements describe the direction, not a guaranteed outcome.
What the shift means for creators
Meta reported more than 2,000 mobile-only Worlds in 2025, up from zero, and said mobile monthly active users grew more than fourfold during that year. It also reported that four creators reached $1 million in lifetime revenue and that nearly 100 earned six figures in 2025.

These numbers are company-reported and should not be read as typical creator income. They indicate the size of the opportunity Meta is presenting, not a forecast for an individual project.
For developers, the practical split is:
- Build for Quest when the product depends on immersive VR interaction, headset tracking or a traditional standalone VR app.
- Build for Worlds mobile when the target is social play and creation accessible through phones.
- Choose distribution deliberately: Meta’s announcements describe different audiences, tools and monetization priorities for the two platforms, but do not identify a guaranteed winner.
How to interpret Meta’s strategy
The policy is best understood as portfolio separation. Quest is being positioned as an open VR software ecosystem led by third-party developers. Worlds is being repositioned as a mobile social platform. A change to one product therefore does not answer the broader question of whether Meta believes in VR.
The unresolved question is performance. Meta’s reported usage, revenue and creator figures show activity in both ecosystems, but no independent evidence here establishes whether mobile Worlds will outperform its VR distribution or whether Quest demand will continue to grow.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Meta is moving Horizon Worlds away from Quest and onto mobile, not ending Quest VR. The announced Worlds cutoff was June 15, 2026; standalone Quest apps and Meta’s broader VR investment remain separate and ongoing. Treat Meta’s growth and earnings figures as company-reported results, and verify current Worlds access in the Meta Horizon mobile app.
