Meta announced plans in April 2024 to let select companies build headsets using the software behind Quest, which it named Meta Horizon OS. ASUS ROG and Lenovo were among the partners, but their proposed devices were not announced as products for sale. In December 2025, Meta confirmed it had paused the third-party hardware program; no restart date has been announced.
What Meta announced about Quest OS
On April 22, 2024, Meta said it was opening “the operating system that powers our Meta Quest devices to third-party hardware makers” and gave that software the name Meta Horizon OS. The proposal was for a select group of hardware partners, not an unrestricted license for any company to make a Quest-compatible headset.
Meta described Horizon OS as part of a broader ecosystem that included the Horizon Store and its social features. The announcement outlined partner ambitions, but did not establish finished product specifications, prices, or release dates for the proposed partner headsets. Meta’s April 22, 2024 announcement provides the original description.

| Company or collaboration | Announced direction | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) | A performance gaming headset running Meta Horizon OS | Announced plan; no final specifications or release date established |
| Lenovo | Mixed-reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment | Announced plan; no final specifications or release date established |
| Microsoft/Xbox | A collaboration around an Xbox-inspired limited-edition Meta Quest device | Resulted in the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, announced June 24, 2025 |
ASUS and Lenovo were associated with proposed partner headsets for different uses. The Xbox collaboration should not be read as a separate Xbox-designed headset running Horizon OS: the announced product was a special edition of Meta’s Quest 3S. Xbox Wire’s June 24, 2025 announcement describes that device.

Why the proposed ASUS and Lenovo headsets are not current buying options
Meta confirmed in December 2025 that it had paused the third-party Horizon OS hardware program while it focused on first-party products. Road to VR reported an unnamed Meta spokesperson saying, “We have paused the program to focus on building the world-class first-party hardware and software needed to advance the VR market.” Road to VR’s December 17, 2025 report gives the statement and status update.
A pause is not the same as a confirmed permanent cancellation, but the sources do not establish whether or when the program might resume. They also do not provide final ASUS or Lenovo headset specifications or shipping details. Treat those devices as paused plans, not products currently available to buy.

What the announcement means for Quest buyers
Meta’s 2024 proposal suggested that Horizon OS might eventually run on hardware from more than one manufacturer, with devices designed around distinct uses such as gaming or productivity. The December 2025 pause means buyers should not choose a headset on the assumption that an ASUS ROG or Lenovo Horizon OS model is imminent. The concrete Xbox-related product is the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, which remains a Meta Quest device rather than an independent partner headset.
