Meta’s Muse is a personal AI agent designed to take actions across connected services, not just answer questions. That can make it useful—but it may also need access to sensitive accounts and information. Meta describes controls for permissions, approvals, training use and stored data, but those are company claims, not an independent security audit. Here’s what Muse is, what Meta says happens to your data, and what the remaining concerns mean for users.
What is Meta Muse?
Meta announced Muse on September 8, 2026, describing it as a personal AI agent powered by Muse Spark. Meta says it can work across connected services, open a browser, fill out forms and continue longer tasks in the background. It may ask for approval before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase. At launch, Meta said Muse was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and muse.ai; AI glasses were planned for a later date. The Associated Press described the initial product as available to U.S. adults 18 and older. Availability and age requirements can change, so check the current product information before signing up. Muse is also the name of Meta’s media-generation products
Meta introduced Muse Image and previewed Muse Video in July 2026. Muse Image is an image-generation and editing model integrated with Muse Spark. Meta described Muse Video as a video model with native audio support and said it was coming soon to creators and Meta AI at the time. Muse Image availability varied by service and location: Meta said it was available in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, in Instagram Stories in the U.S., and in WhatsApp in limited countries. What does Meta say Muse does with your data?
For the agent, the central trade-off is access: Muse may be more useful when it can work with email, calendars, accounts and other connected services, but each connection can expose more personal information. Meta says users choose which services to connect and what permissions to grant, and can disconnect services. It also says connected-service credentials are stored securely and that users can ask Muse to forget specific information it has learned. Meta’s announcement; Meta AI Research’s safety post.

Meta’s described architecture and safeguards
Meta says each user’s Muse runs in a dedicated cloud virtual machine containing the agent and that user’s data. It describes a separate Sentinel process that must approve internet access, approval prompts for sensitive actions and an audit trail. Meta also says Muse conversations and virtual-machine data are not shared with its advertising systems. Training use: check the current setting
Meta says agent conversations, tool calls and handoffs between subagents—what it calls “trajectories”—can help train new model checkpoints. It says these are sanitized to remove key personally identifiable information and that users can opt out in Muse settings. Axios reported on September 25, 2026, that interaction use for training was allowed by default and could be turned off. Because both defaults and interface labels may change, check the current Muse settings rather than assuming a particular choice is still in effect. Meta AI Research; Axios.

Confidential processing was announced as a future feature
In its September announcement, Meta said it planned to introduce Muse Confidential VM later in 2026. The proposed feature would encrypt the virtual machine using a key held only by the user, so Meta could not access it. That was a planned capability in the announcement, not evidence that it is currently available. Axios also reported plans for private processing with AI glasses and noted that Muse privacy changes may not apply equally to people using Meta AI through other apps. More access means more to protect
Permission choices can limit what Muse can reach, but an agent that acts across services still creates a practical question: what access is necessary for the task, and what can remain disconnected? Read-only access and permission to send, change or purchase are not equivalent. Before connecting an account, review the permissions shown and whether the action requires your approval. Meta’s described prompts and controls may reduce the chance of unwanted actions; they do not establish that every mistake or misuse is impossible.

Prompt injection and errors are acknowledged risks
Meta’s safety post says prompt injection remains an open problem and that Muse will sometimes make mistakes. Prompt injection occurs when instructions embedded in content an agent encounters try to override its intended directions. Meta describes technical and permission controls intended to limit harm, but its own acknowledgment means the system should not be treated as infallible. Avoid giving it broad permissions for consequential actions unless you are comfortable with the risks and available safeguards. Meta AI Research.
A Muse Image feature was withdrawn after criticism
In July 2026, Meta withdrew a Muse Image feature that automatically made photos from public Instagram accounts available as references for image generation. The Associated Press reported that the feature prompted privacy concerns and calls for users to change Instagram settings. Meta said its intent was to offer a creative tool and give people control over whether their public content could be referenced, but that the feature “missed the mark” and was no longer available. This controversy concerned Muse Image; it does not describe how every Muse agent interaction works. It does show that features and defaults can change after users object. Associated Press.

Cloud-data privacy and bystander privacy are different issues
Encryption or restricted access to an agent’s stored data would not answer whether people near a camera- or microphone-equipped device consent to being recorded. Axios quoted Electronic Privacy Information Center executive director Alan Butler warning that Meta devices with embedded cameras and microphones pose risks to people who may be recorded without choosing to use them. Butler also argued that confidential processing does not solve the broader concern of placing such devices in everyday settings. This is a concern about capture and bystanders, separate from who can access stored agent conversations. Axios.

- What can it access? Connect only the services needed for the task, and review the specific permissions requested.
- Can it change things or only read them? Treat permission to send messages, edit records or make purchases as more consequential than access to view information.
- Will interactions be used for training? Check the current Muse setting and opt out if you do not want eligible interactions used as Meta describes.
- Can you review and undo activity? Find the audit trail, approval prompts and options to disconnect services or ask Muse to forget learned information.
- Who can access stored data? Do not assume the announced Confidential VM is available; verify the feature and its scope before relying on it.
- Could nearby people be recorded? Consider camera and microphone use separately from the agent’s cloud storage and data controls.
