Meta said it is letting go employees it hired from AI safety startup Virtue AI about four months after they joined. The company attributed the split to “clashing work styles,” according to a spokesperson quoted by Semafor. The reported hiring in June included Virtue AI co-founders Bo Li, Dawn Song, and Sanmi Koyejo.
What happened between Meta and the Virtue AI team?
Meta hired Virtue AI co-founders Bo Li, Dawn Song, and Sanmi Koyejo, along with other team members, for Meta Superintelligence Labs in June 2026, according to Axios. On October 2, Semafor reported that Meta said it was letting go employees hired from Virtue AI, roughly four months after they joined.
The hiring was described as bringing the founders and other employees into Meta, not as an acquisition of Virtue AI. Axios said the terms of the arrangement had not been disclosed.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told Semafor, “Unfortunately, the arrangement didn’t work out as planned,” and attributed the decision to “clashing work styles.” Those are Meta’s stated explanation; the reports do not independently establish what the disagreement involved or provide a more detailed account.

Who joined Meta from Virtue AI?
The three co-founders named in Axios’s June hiring report were:
- Bo Li
- Dawn Song
- Sanmi Koyejo
The report also said other Virtue AI team members joined. Semafor’s October report refers to employees hired from Virtue AI, but the available accounts do not give a complete count of people affected or confirm their subsequent roles.

What was Virtue AI’s work, and what does Meta say about AI safety?
Axios described Virtue AI as an AI security startup whose work included automated red teaming, runtime guardrails, and AI governance. Meta said its Superintelligence Labs remained focused on AI safety, alignment, and frontier risk. That statement describes Meta’s stated focus; it does not establish what specific work the former Virtue AI hires performed or what safety outcomes the lab has achieved.

Did Meta acquire Virtue AI?
The cited reports do not establish that Meta acquired Virtue AI. Axios reported that the founders and other team members joined Meta and that the arrangement’s terms were not disclosed. Without disclosed terms or an explicit report of an acquisition, the move is best described as a hiring arrangement.
