Instagram removed a satirical video filmed outside Meta’s Amsterdam office with Meta AI camera glasses after Meta reportedly classified it as bullying and harassment or intimidation. That incident involves camera glasses—not the separate Meta VR Glasses that Meta announced for a planned Spring 2027 release at $1,299.99 USD.
Why did Instagram remove the Amsterdam video?
Dutch presenter Roel Maalderink and digital-rights organization Bits of Freedom filmed outside Meta’s Amsterdam office, using Meta AI camera glasses to record Maalderink asking employees what they thought of the glasses. Instagram removed the video in September 2026. DutchNews reported that Meta cited bullying and harassment; Bits of Freedom’s account of the removal notice describes the alleged issue as bullying and intimidation.
That is Meta’s reported moderation rationale, not an independent finding that the video violated Instagram’s rules. Bits of Freedom says employee faces were blurred and unrecognizable in the video. The video remained available on YouTube, according to DutchNews’s September 24 report.

The organization’s English statement also quotes Maalderink saying the takedown surprised him, despite his having made satirical videos for 10 years. These are the organization’s account and estimate, not an audited view count or a separately reviewed interview transcript. Bits of Freedom’s September 24 statement provides its description of the video and removal.

What are Meta’s $1,299 VR Glasses?
Meta VR Glasses are a separate, planned virtual-reality product—not the camera glasses used in the Amsterdam video. Meta announced them on September 23, 2026, with a planned Spring 2027 sale and an announced price of $1,299.99 USD. That is a future product announcement, not a verified current retail listing.
Meta describes the device as a face-worn display weighing about 100 grams. Its two-part design puts compute, battery, and storage in a separate puck connected to the glasses by an optical tether. Meta says the glasses are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3. The company lists 5K micro-OLED panels, eye and hand-gesture interaction, Meta AI, and up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback from the puck battery. These are Meta’s announced specifications and claims, not independent test results.

Are the camera glasses and VR Glasses the same product?
No. The Amsterdam video was made with Meta AI camera glasses, which record video. Meta VR Glasses are a separately announced VR device with a face-worn display and a tethered compute, battery, and storage puck. The available accounts treat them as distinct products; the shared Meta name does not make them interchangeable.

What the separate face-recognition report does—and does not—establish
In June 2026, WIRED reported finding unactivated face-recognition software components, internally called NameTag, in the Meta AI companion app for Meta smart glasses. WIRED later reported that a subsequent app version removed those components. Meta communications vice president Andy Stone told WIRED the feature was “purely exploratory” and that “No final decision has been made on what to do here, if anything.”
This is separate context about smart glasses software. The available reporting does not say face recognition caused Instagram to remove the Amsterdam video. See WIRED’s June 8, 2026 report.
