Meta announced Teen Accounts for Facebook and Messenger in April 2025, initially starting in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. On September 25, 2025, it announced expansion to teens around the world on both services. Meta says the accounts apply automatic protections to contact, content, and time use, though some later controls are described as rolling out rather than active on every account.
What are Facebook Teen Accounts?
Teen Accounts are Meta account settings intended to give teens a more restricted experience by default. Meta says they limit who can contact teens and what content they see, while encouraging breaks from app use. The safeguards described here are Meta’s stated product features, not independent evidence that the accounts prevent harm.
Default settings Meta described in April 2025
Meta said teens are placed in private accounts by default, notifications are silenced overnight, and they receive a reminder to leave the app after 60 minutes. On Messenger, Meta said only people a teen follows or is already connected to can message them. Meta also said teens under 16 need parental permission to make Teen Account settings less strict. These are the settings in Meta’s April 8, 2025 announcement; the company’s later updates describe additional protections and rollouts.

In the September announcement, Meta also said hundreds of millions of teens had been placed in Teen Accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger combined. It did not give an exact count for that figure, which is not a Facebook-and-Messenger-only total.

What can teens do on Messenger Teen Accounts?
Meta’s April 2025 description says teens can receive messages only from people they follow or are already connected to. The company’s June 2026 update described a further Messenger control: its 13+ content setting limits teens’ ability to view links to inappropriate Facebook content or chat with accounts that primarily share such content on Facebook.
Meta described the 13+ settings as rolling out globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger Teen Accounts. That wording does not establish that the setting is active on every account. Meta’s description also concerns links and accounts associated with Facebook content; it should not be read as a guarantee that all unsuitable messages or links are blocked.

What content settings has Meta added?
In June 2026, Meta said 13+ content settings were rolling out globally to Teen Accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Meta describes the Facebook setting as designed to hide content it considers inappropriate for teens in places such as Feed and Reels, and to limit interaction with profiles, pages, groups, and events that primarily post such material. The corresponding Messenger setting is described above.
The announcement describes a rollout, not a completed change on every teen account. Meta’s wording is that content is intended to be hidden or access limited; it does not establish that the system catches every item or account a parent or teen might consider inappropriate.

Can parents manage a teen’s Facebook and Messenger settings?
Meta distinguishes Teen Account defaults from parental supervision. The defaults are the account protections Meta says apply automatically. Supervision is a separate management layer: in June 2026, Meta said parents whose teens are enrolled in supervision can manage activity across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger through Family Center. The cited update does not say that every Teen Account is automatically enrolled in supervision.
How does Meta identify teen accounts?
Meta said in May 2026 that it was expanding technology intended to identify suspected teen accounts and place them into Teen Account protections. The geographic rollout it specified was for Instagram in the European Union and Brazil, and Facebook in the United States, followed by the United Kingdom and EU. That announcement does not establish the same proactive rollout everywhere on Messenger.

Meta corrected its age-assurance post on July 31, 2026, saying its AI does not use biometric data to decide whether someone is underage, does not create facial fingerprints, and does not identify a person in a photo. These are Meta’s descriptions of its technology and deployment, not a claim that the process is universal across services or regions.
What do Meta’s reported figures show?
Meta has published adoption and opinion figures, but they measure different things and do not establish whether Facebook or Messenger Teen Accounts reduce harm.

- 97% of teens aged 13–15 stayed within Instagram Teen Account restrictions: Meta reported this in 2025. It is an Instagram figure, not an outcome measure for Facebook or Messenger.
- 94% of surveyed US parents said Teen Accounts would be helpful: Meta said Ipsos conducted the survey and Meta commissioned it. This records parent opinion, not an independent efficacy evaluation.
- Online-safety curriculum projections: Meta said its goal was to reach one million US middle school students, while educators and parents who had accessed its free curriculum expected to teach more than 550,000 in the coming year. These were projected reach figures, not measured completions.
Are Teen Accounts available worldwide?
Meta announced worldwide expansion to teens on Facebook and Messenger on September 25, 2025, after the initial four-country introduction. “Worldwide” describes the announced expansion; it does not mean every later protection or content setting is necessarily available on every account. For example, Meta described the 13+ content settings in June 2026 as rolling out globally, and its age-assurance post specified particular service and country deployments.
