Parents supervising a teen can see the topics their teen asked Meta AI about over the previous seven days, but not the conversations themselves. Meta’s October 5, 2026 update says supervision for the Meta AI app is available globally and can be turned on in the app or through Family Center. Parents can also choose a stricter Limited Content setting in place of the default 13+ setting.
What parents can see
The feature works at the level of topics, not transcripts. Meta’s October 5, 2026 update to its April 23, 2026 newsroom announcement states:
“By turning on supervision, parents and guardians will be able to see the topics their teen has been asking about over the past seven days, but not the conversations themselves.”

In practical terms, a parent sees a list of subject categories tied to the teen’s recent questions. The parent does not see the prompts the teen typed or the answers Meta AI gave. Meta’s announcements do not say whether topic summaries include detail beyond category labels, so do not assume they reveal the wording of any exchange.

How to turn on supervision for Meta AI
Meta says supervision can be set up in two places: the Meta AI app itself, or Family Center. The announcement does not publish menu labels or screen-by-screen steps, and it does not spell out account linking requirements or minimum app versions. The sequence below follows the order Meta describes; the exact wording in your app may differ.
- Open the Meta AI app or Family Center, depending on which route you prefer. Both are named in Meta’s update as valid entry points.
- Find the supervision option for your teen’s account and turn it on.
- Choose a content setting. The default is 13+. Limited Content is the stricter alternative.
Meta also says it offers expert conversation starters for parents, which can be useful once supervision is active and you want to discuss what your teen is using the assistant for.

The two content settings
The default 13+ setting applies Meta’s standard age-appropriate protections. Limited Content is described as more restrictive and further limits the kinds of conversations a teen can have in Meta AI. Meta does not describe Limited Content as a block on all sensitive subjects, and the announcement does not list every topic it restricts. If a specific subject matters to your family, check how the setting handles it yourself rather than relying on a general assumption.

Meta has announced several separate teen AI controls since October 2025. They differ in what they reveal to parents, which surface they cover, and when they rolled out. Keep them distinct rather than treating them as one feature.

The table shows that a parent in one country may have access to a control that a parent elsewhere does not yet have, and that a Meta AI app setting does not automatically carry over to every other app. Check each app’s own supervision options.

They do not independently confirm how accurately topic categories are assigned, whether the controls improve teen wellbeing, or how long topic data is retained and how it is handled. Practical next steps
- Confirm the supervision option is visible in your teen’s Meta AI app or Family Center before assuming it is active.
- Decide between 13+ and Limited Content, and revisit the choice as your teen’s needs change.
- Review the topic categories with your teen as a conversation, not as a surveillance report, since the feature shows subjects rather than what was said.
- If your teen uses WhatsApp, set the WhatsApp Meta AI option separately.
- If you are in a country outside the listed rollout regions, expect some controls to arrive later.
