Mercury-containing skin-lightening products were reported for sale through third-party marketplaces on Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop—but the finding is a dated snapshot, not proof that any particular listing is still live. Reuters reported on September 16, 2026, that more than 20 banned mercury skin-bleaching products were available across those marketplaces in several countries. The report does not provide a current inventory or rank the platforms by prevalence. If you may have used a suspect cream, stop using it, wash the exposed skin and contact a healthcare professional or Poison Control.
What the report says—and what it does not establish
Reuters reported that it found more than 20 products containing mercury available through third-party marketplaces run by Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop in several countries. The finding was republished by the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership on September 16, 2026. It is a report about publicly available information at that time, not a live audit.
The report does not establish which listings remain accessible now, give a country-by-country inventory, or show how many products were found on each platform. It also does not mean that every skin-lightening cream sold on these sites contains mercury. More than 150 nations are parties to the 2013 Minamata Convention, according to the UNEP report, but that count is not a platform-by-platform enforcement measure.
Why mercury in whitening cream is dangerous
Mercury can be absorbed through repeated skin use and build up in the body. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns of possible kidney damage, neurological effects and direct skin injury. Its broader safety guidance also describes potential harm to the nervous, digestive and immune systems, lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes. Possible neurological symptoms include tremors, tingling or numbness, headache, fatigue, and changes in mood or thinking. These are potential harms, not proof that every exposure causes poisoning; risk increases with repeated or longer use.

Children and pregnant people face heightened risks. People who do not use the cream may also be exposed to mercury vapors or contaminated towels and other items in the home. The FDA’s consumer warning and tested-product information explain the health concerns and identify products the agency has tested.
How to tell whether a skin cream may contain mercury
Check the ingredient list for these names: mercurous chloride, calomel, mercuric, mercurio or Hg. The FDA says mercury can appear under any of them. But a label check cannot prove a cream is safe: some illegal products may omit harmful ingredients from the label.

- Treat a product as a warning sign if it has no ingredient label, a handmade label, or a label only in a language other than English.
- Do not assume an unlisted ingredient means the cream is mercury-free. The FDA’s guidance says, “If the ingredients aren’t listed and there is no product label, don’t assume it’s fine.”
- Do not try to confirm safety by testing a suspicious cream yourself. A label or product description is not a substitute for reliable testing or medical advice.
What to do if you used a suspect cream
- Stop using it and wash the contacted skin.
- Contact a healthcare professional or clinic. Tell them the product name, how and when you used it, and whether other people may have had contact with it.
- Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for advice about possible exposure. The number and response steps are provided in the FDA’s guidance on mercury poisoning linked to skin products.
- Keep the product contained while you seek disposal advice. Before discarding it, seal it in a plastic bag or leak-proof container, then ask local environmental, health or solid-waste authorities how to dispose of it. Do not put it in ordinary household waste unless local authorities say that is appropriate.
FDA rules and a documented U.S. enforcement case
In the United States, the FDA says mercury use in skin-lightening products is banned. The agency also says, “There are no FDA-approved or legally marketed OTC skin lightening products.” That warning concerns over-the-counter products; it does not mean every treatment for pigmentation is illegal. Prescription hydroquinone may be provided by a healthcare professional. For dark or age spots, the FDA recommends discussing options with a doctor.

The FDA’s testing table records a historical finding involving HIYADY Glutatione Cream White & Bright: it listed Amazon.com as the seller, the country of origin as unknown, and a test result of 15,900 ppm mercury in 2022. That is an agency lab result for that product at that time—not evidence that the cream is currently listed or that other products have the same mercury level.

On January 30, 2025, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a proposed Amazon settlement over allegations involving sales into California of skin-lightening face creams with high mercury levels. The announcement described more than $600,000 in payments and costs. Proposed provisions included continued adjustment of a suppression rule, an experienced independent product consultant and a pre-approved list of brands without mercury. The proposed consent judgment was subject to court approval, as stated in the California Attorney General’s announcement.

The Reuters report is a warning that prohibited products have been reported on major third-party marketplaces, not a reliable way to determine what is available today or which platform has the most listings. For a specific product, check the ingredients and packaging for warning signs, but do not treat a clean-looking label as proof of safety. If exposure may have occurred, follow medical and local disposal guidance rather than relying on the marketplace listing or product claims.
