Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation on October 12, 2026, when it sits about 25° east of the Sun as seen from Earth. Because Mercury is east of the Sun at that point, it is an evening object: it appears in the western sky after sunset and sets soon afterward. October 12 is the date to look for it, but it is a low, short-lived target, so the practical question is how to find it in the twilight.
What “farthest from the sunset” actually means
The phrase describes apparent angular separation as seen from Earth, not the planet’s physical distance from the Sun. Mercury’s orbit keeps it relatively close to the Sun, and at greatest eastern elongation it appears at its maximum angle east of the Sun. Because the Sun is setting in the west at that moment, Mercury’s position in the sky is what makes it visible after sunset.
Two terms are worth separating. “Elongation” is the angle between the planet and the Sun. “Eastern” means the planet is east of the Sun, which is why it appears in the evening rather than before dawn. Greatest eastern elongation is therefore the peak of an evening apparition.

| Source | Stated time | Time basis | Same moment in UTC | Stated separation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), 2026 | 19h on October 12 | JCST (Japan Standard Time, UTC+9) | 10:00 UTC (calculated from the stated time) | 25°10′ |
| PAGASA, 2026 | 6:03 p.m. on October 12 | Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8) | 10:03 UTC (calculated from the stated time) | Not stated in this source |
| EarthSky, article dated October 9, 2026 | 10 UTC | UTC | 10:00 UTC | About 25° |
The NAOJ figures come from a calculated ephemeris. NAOJ notes that its values may differ from figures published elsewhere as calculation methods and orbital parameters are updated, so treat 25°10′ as the precise published value and the other figures as close matches.
To convert the moment to your own clock, start from 10:00 UTC on October 12 and apply your offset. A reader in the Philippines, for example, is looking at about 10:00 p.m. local time only if the event is taken as 10:00 UTC plus eight hours; the published PAGASA time is 6:03 p.m. because that is the moment of the event itself, stated in Philippine time. Whatever the local clock says, the event happens at the same instant everywhere.

How to look for Mercury after sunset
The event itself is an instant, but the observing window is the period of twilight after sunset. The steps below assume you are at a mid-latitude site with a usable western horizon.
- Find your local sunset time for October 12. Use a weather service, a local almanac, or a planetarium app set to your exact location and date. Sunset times vary widely with latitude and with where you stand within your time zone.
- Arrive before sunset and stay until the sky is dark enough to see faint stars. Start looking soon after the Sun sets, while the sky is still darkening but Mercury has not yet dropped out of view. Mercury sets soon after the Sun, so waiting too long can cost you the window.
- Face the western horizon. Choose a spot with a clear, low view to the west. Buildings, trees, hills, and power lines can hide a low planet entirely.
- Use a planetarium app or sky chart to confirm the position. Set it to your location and to the moment you plan to look, then check where the Sun has set and where Mercury sits relative to it.
- Scan with your unaided eyes first. Mercury is bright, but it is close to the twilight glow and low in the sky, so it can be easy to miss without a clear reference point.
- Use binoculars only after sunset, and only as an optional aid. Binoculars can help you scan the low western sky, but they do not guarantee that you will see the planet. Never point binoculars or a telescope toward the Sun, either before sunset or while it is still above the horizon.
Why the date alone does not guarantee a good view
A favorable elongation does not mean Mercury will be easy to see everywhere. Four factors determine what you actually observe.

Horizon and twilight
NASA explains that an object low in twilight can be difficult to spot because the sky is still bright and the planet is close to the horizon, where haze and atmospheric absorption are strongest. A flat, open western horizon helps a great deal. Night-sky sites with elevated western views are more likely to show the planet than a valley or a city street.
Altitude above the horizon
NASA’s general guidance for naked-eye planet viewing is that an object should be at least a few degrees above the horizon, with 10° or higher giving the best conditions. This is general guidance, not a Mercury-specific threshold. Mercury’s elongation of about 25° does not mean it will climb to 25° in the sky at the time you are looking, because its altitude depends on the time after sunset and on your latitude.

Hemisphere and season
EarthSky’s October 9, 2026 article describes the October 2026 evening apparition as relatively favorable for the Southern Hemisphere. Autumn evening elongations are harder to see from either hemisphere because the ecliptic, the path the planets follow across the sky, meets the evening horizon at a shallow angle. In practice, this means Mercury stays lower and sinks more quickly. Readers in the Northern Hemisphere should expect a more challenging view and should plan to start very early in the twilight.

Atmosphere and obstructions
Haze, cloud, humidity, and light pollution all reduce the contrast of a low object. Even an excellent horizon can be spoiled by a bank of cloud that sits on the western sky at sunset. A clear forecast and a clear horizon are both needed.

What the sources do not establish
No source identifies a single best local observing time for October 12, and none guarantees that a given reader will see Mercury. The published times describe the moment of greatest elongation, not a recommended start time for viewing. Your own sunset time, horizon, and weather decide the actual window. A planetarium check for your exact location is the most reliable way to set expectations.
The separation figures are also worth reading carefully. The 25°10′ value from NAOJ and the approximately 25° value from EarthSky describe the same geometry. They do not describe how high above the horizon Mercury will be when you look, and they do not describe how bright it will appear through haze.
The equipment question has a simple answer: the event is visible to the unaided eye when conditions are good, and binoculars are an optional help rather than a requirement.
