Spy shots of a Mercedes-Benz VLE appear to show a possible hybrid version, but Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed the prototype’s powertrain. The visible clues—a conventional grille, an additional rear-quarter flap and what looks like an exhaust muffler—are the basis for the hybrid interpretation, not proof of a production model.
What the Mercedes VLE spy shots appear to show
Carscoops reports that the Mercedes VLE caught testing has a conventional radiator grille, a second flap on the rear quarter opposite the charging flap, and what appears to be an exhaust muffler. Together, those details suggest a combustion engine could be part of the test vehicle’s powertrain. They do not establish that the vehicle is a production-intent hybrid, or identify its engine.
Carscoops speculates that the engine could be a 1.5-liter inline-four, but that detail is unconfirmed. Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed the prototype’s configuration in the cited report. Mercedes-Benz’s announced VLE is all-electric. The company’s portfolio announcement describes a passenger-oriented Grand Limousine with up to eight seats, intended to span family and leisure use through VIP shuttle service. Mercedes-Benz Group summarized its approach in July 2025: “Bringing the best of two worlds together, the all-electric VLE combines limousine-like driving behaviour with MPV-like (multi-purpose vehicle) versatility.” That statement concerns the electric VLE, not the possible hybrid prototype. Electric VLE figures reported at launch
Carscoops lists the electric VLE300 at 272 hp and the electric VLE400 at 409 hp. It also reports a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.4 seconds for the VLE400. These figures describe the reported electric versions; they are not specifications for the suspected hybrid. MotorTrend also covers the VLE300 and VLE400 4Matic, and estimates around 360 miles of U.S. range while noting that an EPA figure had not yet been tested in its March 2026 article. Mercedes-Benz Group also described a development journey from Stuttgart to Rome covering 1,100 kilometres with two 15-minute charging stops. Where the VLE fits in Mercedes-Benz’s lineup

Its stated range of uses runs from family and leisure travel to VIP shuttles, which helps explain the “Grand Limousine” framing: the vehicle combines a people-carrier layout with a premium passenger focus. Whether a combustion-assisted version joins the electric model remains unknown.

Mercedes-Benz’s portfolio plan also describes a more luxurious Mercedes-Maybach VLS, focused on passenger space and the rear-seat experience. The VLS is a separate model in that plan; it should not be confused with the VLE seen in the spy shots. Mercedes-Benz Media’s VLS announcement

If the spy-shot interpretation is right, a hybrid could give VLE customers an alternative to the announced all-electric model. That may broaden the vehicle’s appeal to buyers seeking combustion assistance, but the photographs do not show what the system would deliver in power, electric-only travel or fuel consumption. Until Mercedes-Benz confirms the prototype and its plans, the clearest distinction is between the premiered electric VLE and a possible hybrid suggested by testing clues.
