Mercedes-Benz is bringing Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent to the MBUX Virtual Assistant, starting with the new CLA. The announced feature uses Gemini on Vertex AI and Google Maps Platform information to support conversational navigation and searches for nearby places. Drivers can ask follow-up questions about suggested destinations, while navigation details appear in the vehicle’s native interface.
What the Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud partnership announced
On January 13, 2025, Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud announced an expanded strategic partnership. The Mercedes implementation connects Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, built using Gemini on Vertex AI, with the MBUX Virtual Assistant. Mercedes-Benz named the new CLA as the first vehicle for the feature. The original announcement projected availability with the CLA later in 2025; that announcement is a historical expectation, not confirmation that the feature is available in every CLA, market, or current model year. Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s announcement and Mercedes-Benz USA’s July 2025 CLA materials describe the integration, but do not provide a complete current rollout list.
This is software integrated by the automaker, not a separate consumer app that drivers can install in other cars. Google Cloud describes its Automotive AI Agent as a customizable platform for automakers. Its wider platform description includes potential interactions involving navigation, search, media, communication, and vehicle controls, but those platform-level capabilities should not be read as a feature list for the Mercedes deployment. The Mercedes-specific announcement focuses on conversational navigation and points-of-interest searches using information from Google Maps Platform. A driver might ask, “Could you guide me to the nearest fine-dining restaurant for a unique culinary experience?” Then they could follow up with questions such as “Does the restaurant have good reviews?” or “What is the chef’s signature dish?”

Mercedes-Benz says the assistant can handle multi-turn dialogue, retain conversation context, respond with information, and show navigation details through the car’s native interface. That means a driver can continue a discussion about a suggested place rather than restarting the search with every question. These are capabilities described by the companies; the announcements do not establish independent results for response accuracy, speed, or driver safety.
What the Google Maps figures mean
In its January 2025 announcement, Mercedes-Benz Group AG said Google Maps Platform covered 250 million places worldwide and received more than 100 million map updates per day. These are figures reported by Mercedes-Benz in that announcement, not independently audited measurements. They describe the mapping information cited as part of the partnership; they do not guarantee that every place or update will be available through the Mercedes assistant in every market.

What is not yet established
The available official materials describe the intended product and its features, but do not establish independent real-world accuracy, user satisfaction, response times, or safety outcomes. They also do not specify privacy or data-retention terms, a separate feature price or subscription, or a complete country-by-country and model-year rollout. Check the relevant vehicle and market documentation for current availability rather than treating the January 2025 launch projection as a universal release confirmation.

Google Cloud characterizes its broader Automotive AI Agent platform as multimodal, multilingual, customizable, and designed to integrate with existing vehicle architectures, Android Automotive OS, and Google built-in applications. Those are platform-level descriptions; the Mercedes announcement does not verify that each capability is present in every Mercedes vehicle or market.
