Menlo Ventures’ public statements do not establish that AI is slowing, and the available market data do not substantiate a broad wave of investors cashing out of listed startups. Menlo’s June 2026 announcement describes an AI-focused investment strategy, while Carta’s Q1 2026 figures show AI taking a large share of venture funding on its platform. Separately, a private secondary sale or tender offer is not the same as selling shares after a public listing. The title’s two claims should therefore be assessed independently.
Does Menlo Ventures say AI is slowing?
Not in the public materials identified here. Menlo’s report index lists a September 2026 consumer AI report and a 2025 enterprise AI report; it does not identify a report specifically announcing an AI slowdown.
Menlo’s 2025 enterprise AI report summary estimates that companies spent $37 billion on generative AI in 2025, a 3.2-fold increase from 2024. That is Menlo’s estimate for enterprise generative AI spending during 2025—not a measurement of 2026 demand or a forecast. It can indicate strong growth over that period, but cannot by itself establish what happened afterward. Menlo Ventures’ enterprise AI report summary

Menlo’s June 23, 2026 announcement points in the opposite direction from a public retreat: the firm said it had reorganized around AI more than three years earlier and was raising capital for investments across AI infrastructure, frontier technologies, and applications. Partner Matt Murphy described AI as “one of the largest technology platform shifts we’ll see in this lifetime.” That is Murphy’s opinion and the firm’s stated investment outlook, not independent evidence that AI companies will perform well. What do the funding figures say?
Carta recorded $30.4 billion in startup funding in Q1 2026. More than 60% of venture capital raised by companies on Carta during that quarter went to AI companies. These figures describe Carta’s platform and that quarter; they are not a census of every startup or venture investment. The AI share signals concentration of capital in Carta’s dataset, not a general decline in AI investment. Carta’s State of Private Markets: Q1 2026
Spending, funding, and investment strategy measure different things. Enterprise spending estimates describe company purchases; venture-funding figures track capital raised by startups; a fund announcement describes an investor’s plans. One cannot substitute for another as a measure of AI adoption, company performance, or investor returns.
What does “investors cash out” mean?
The phrase can describe different transactions with different implications. A private secondary sale and a tender offer can provide liquidity before a company lists; selling shares after a listing happens in public markets. Carta says private-market secondaries and tender offers are practical liquidity mechanisms for many companies, while public listings are returning selectively. Those channels should not be collapsed into one story about listed companies’ investors selling.

A sale also needs to be distinguished from a paper gain. A financing round or reported valuation does not show that an investor received cash. To substantiate a claim that investors in a particular listed startup cashed out, reporting needs to identify the company, seller, timing, transaction mechanism, and amount. Depending on the transaction, the seller could be a fund, an employee, or another shareholder; the label “investors” alone does not answer who sold or whether proceeds went to a venture firm’s own investors.

What does Menlo’s $3 billion announcement establish?
Menlo announced $3 billion in new capital in June 2026, with the stated intention to invest across AI infrastructure, frontier technology, and applications. The firm described a flagship venture fund for seed and Series A investments and a growth fund for Series B and later stages. This establishes Menlo’s stated plans and investment focus, not realized returns or an exit by the firm’s investors.
TechCrunch reported that Menlo confirmed investing more than $500 million from funds it managed in an Anthropic investment in 2024, and later invested in additional rounds. It also reported on Menlo’s Anthology fund. Those details describe reported investment history; they do not show that Menlo or its investors have cashed out.

Reuters Breakingviews’ July 2026 column argues that outsized AI-company outcomes could have uneven consequences for venture firms, including pressure around fundraising. It is commentary about possible effects, not a transaction record documenting a broad wave of investors selling shares in listed startups. Reuters Breakingviews’ July 2026 column
Because the claim about listed-startup investors does not name companies, sellers, sale dates, or transaction types, the cited market sources cannot establish who is cashing out or whether the activity is widespread. Company-specific filings or named transaction reporting would be needed to support that conclusion. On the evidence available, the defensible reading is narrower: AI remains a major focus in Menlo’s stated strategy and in Carta’s Q1 2026 funding data, while private liquidity transactions and public-market sales are distinct—and neither proves an industry-wide exit wave.
