The €150 price refers to an expired ServeTheHome forum sale thread posted on April 10, 2019—not a live offer or a reliable guide to today’s used-switch prices. The Mellanox SX6036 itself is a rack-mount, 36-port QSFP+ switch designed for high-speed InfiniBand or, depending on the specific configuration, Ethernet deployments.
Is the Mellanox SX6036 €150 listing still available?
No. The title comes from a ServeTheHome thread explicitly marked “EXPIRED,” which began on April 10, 2019. Its €150 figure was the seller’s asking price at that time; the thread title does not establish the full transaction history or whether a sale was completed. See the expired ServeTheHome listing.
A separate Tweakers listing dated September 13, 2026, showed a used SX6036 offered for €125, with pickup only and no warranty according to the seller. That is a specific, geographically limited marketplace listing, not evidence of a general current price, and availability may change. Check the Tweakers listing.

The SX6036 is a rack-mount switch in Mellanox’s SwitchX family. NVIDIA Networking / Mellanox Technologies’ SX60XX hardware manual lists 36 QSFP+ connector cages, with supported per-port rates of 40 or 56 Gb/s, and a non-blocking switching capacity of 4.03 Tb/s. Mellanox’s SX6036 product brief describes up to 4.032 Tb/s aggregate throughput for the FDR configuration. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements of the used unit in either listing.
The product brief characterizes the SX6036 as a managed 56 Gb/s InfiniBand/VPI SDN switch system. The expired sale title does not identify the complete part number or installed configuration, so it is not enough to determine the exact capabilities of that particular unit. Forum participants discuss variants such as MSX6036T-1BRS and MSX6036F-2SRS, but those comments are not a substitute for checking the manufacturer documentation for the unit being considered.
InfiniBand or Ethernet: verify the intended setup
Before buying, decide which protocol the network needs. Do not treat an InfiniBand configuration as automatically plug-and-play Ethernet. A seller in the Tweakers listing describes using ConnectX-3 cards with the switch for InfiniBand, or 40GbE QSFP+ cards for Ethernet. That is seller-provided guidance, not universal compatibility documentation. Confirm the precise switch variant, firmware, licenses, host adapters, protocol mode, and cabling for the proposed build.

What to check before buying a used SX6036
Identify the exact unit
- Ask for the complete part number and clear photos of the labels.
- Confirm the number and type of power supplies, airflow direction, chassis depth, firmware, and any required software licenses.
- Check the documentation for that exact variant rather than inferring its capabilities from the SX6036 family name.
Match QSFP+ cables and adapters
The manual documents QSFP interfaces and passive copper or active fiber cable options. Match each cable to the protocol, link rate, endpoint hardware, and required distance; a QSFP connector alone does not guarantee that every cable or connected device will work. For InfiniBand, confirm adapter and cable compatibility for the intended configuration. For Ethernet, verify the switch mode and 40GbE endpoint support.
Check breakout mappings before counting ports
The manual supports port splitting into 10 Gb/s SFP+ connections on supported mappings. Some split modes disable another port, so the number of usable connections may be lower than a simple count of breakout ends suggests. Consult the manual’s port map for the specific split setting before buying a QSFP+ to four-SFP+ breakout cable or planning the port layout.

Confirm the rack and power fit
The hardware manual documents rack mounting, standard- and short-depth chassis sizes, and 100–240 VAC input. Power consumption depends on configuration and cable type; there is no single operating figure that applies to every SX6036. Confirm the dimensions and installation requirements for the exact unit, including rack space, depth, cooling, and whether its noise and thermal output are acceptable where it will run.
Establish used condition and terms
- Ask for evidence that the switch boots and that ports, fans, and power supplies operate.
- Confirm whether rails, cables, and other accessories are included.
- Get the seller’s return terms and warranty status in writing; the €150 forum title does not state them.
Is it suitable for a homelab?
The SX6036 may suit a homelab that genuinely needs high-speed InfiniBand or compatible 40/56 Gb/s networking and can accommodate a rack-mount switch. Suitability depends on the exact unit and on the buyer’s adapters, protocol, cabling, port plan, rack depth, power, and cooling. For a small network that does not need those link rates or protocols, the 36 QSFP+ cages and port-splitting constraints may be more hardware than the build can use effectively.
