The Mellanox SX6012 is not listed as having an officially replaceable fan FRU. Treat a fan swap as an aftermarket repair or modification, not as an official hot-swappable service procedure. A marketplace listing advertises “2x Quiet Replacement Fans for MELLANOX SX6012,” but its electrical and mechanical specifications have not been independently verified.
Does the SX6012 have a replaceable fan?
No—not as an official replaceable field-replaceable unit (FRU). Mellanox/NVIDIA’s SX60XX hardware manual lists the SX6012 as having no replaceable fan, and says its FRU section does not apply to the SX6005 and SX6012. That distinguishes the SX6012 from models for which the manual documents replaceable fan modules.
Aftermarket listings do exist, but their appearance does not make a fan an approved or guaranteed-compatible SX6012 part. Treat any such installation as a repair or modification outside the manual’s official FRU procedure.

How to check an aftermarket SX6012 replacement fan
Before ordering a “quiet replacement fan for Mellanox SX6012,” identify the exact switch revision and compare the candidate fan with the original part. The available evidence does not establish one authoritative set of aftermarket specifications for all SX6012 revisions.

- Replace a noisy or failed computer case fan, Install into a computer to increase air flow and cooling
- Record the switch revision and original fan details. Inspect the installed fan and its label, and document its dimensions, connector, wiring, and markings before removing it.
- Confirm mechanical fit. Compare the fan’s dimensions and mounting arrangement with the original. A product title naming the SX6012 is not proof of a physical fit.
- Verify electrical compatibility. Check voltage, connector pinout, and RPM range against the original fan and the exact switch revision. Do not infer these values from a listing title or from a different Mellanox model.
- Match airflow direction. The Mellanox/NVIDIA manual warns that fan-module airflow must coincide with PSU airflow. Check the direction of the original fan and the replacement; do not rely on “FF” or “FB” labels without confirming what the seller means for the specific part.
- Assess noise and seller terms. “Quiet” is a listing description, not a measured noise specification. Confirm the seller’s return policy and whether the fan is new, used, or refurbished.
Handle an open fan or PSU slot carefully
The Mellanox/NVIDIA hardware manual warns: “Never run the system more than 5 minutes with an uncovered (open) PSU or fan slot.” Keep an exposed slot open only as long as necessary, and do not treat this five-minute limit as permission to operate the switch normally with a fan removed. The manual’s warning applies to an uncovered PSU or fan slot; it does not validate an aftermarket fan or provide a replacement procedure for the SX6012.
