A Mellanox ConnectX-3 can link to an Arista 7050 when the specific NIC, switch port, speed, cable or transceiver, and port configuration are compatible. “Arista 7050” covers multiple models, so there is no single cable or setting that can be confirmed from the family name alone. Work through the checks below, starting with the exact hardware and port types.
Identify the exact hardware and connection
Before changing settings or replacing parts, record the details that determine compatibility:
- The switch’s full DCS-7050 model, EOS version, and the interface identifier and port type.
- The ConnectX-3 board model or Dell part number, whether its port is SFP+ or QSFP+, and its firmware.
- The host operating system and NIC driver.
- The cable or transceiver’s manufacturer, exact part number, type, and length.
Arista documents supported speeds and port behaviors by model, and its compatibility guidance is platform-specific. The 7050 family name by itself is not enough to confirm that a particular interconnect will work. See Arista’s product documentation and choose the documentation for the exact switch.
Confirm the two ports can operate together
Check the physical interface type and supported speed at both ends. As one model-specific example, Arista’s EOS speed table lists 100 Mb/s, 1 Gb/s, and 10 Gb/s for 7050X3 SFP+ ports. Other port types and 7050 models have different speed sets; do not treat that example as a specification for every 7050.

A QSFP cage is not automatically an SFP+ port. If using a QSFP-to-SFP+ adapter or breakout, confirm the switch model supports that arrangement and configure the port accordingly. Arista’s transceiver documentation includes platform-specific compatibility examples and notes cases where QSFP-port use requires an adapter. Check the entry for your exact model and port rather than relying on connector shape or vendor name.
Check the cable or transceiver
Reseat both ends, then verify that the cable or optics are appropriate for the port type and speed and are supported on the exact switch. Dell’s NIC troubleshooting guidance likewise advises checking that compatible SFP or DAC cabling is in use: Dell NIC connectivity troubleshooting.

- For fiber, inspect and clean the connectors and confirm transmit/receive polarity.
- For DAC, check whether the cable is passive or active, its length, and any vendor-coding requirements.
- Where practical, test with a short, known-good cable or optic already confirmed for both endpoints.
Arista’s DMF Hardware Compatibility List names CAB-SFP-SFP-1M, CAB-SFP-SFP-2M, CAB-SFP-SFP-3M, and CAB-SFP-SFP-5M as 10G SFP+ DAC cables supported on several 7050X3 variants. These listed lengths are not blanket approval for every 7050 generation, third-party cable, or ConnectX-3 setup. Consult the applicable table entry: Arista product documentation.
Check switch and host link state
On the switch, inspect whether the interface is administratively enabled, its configured speed and mode, whether the transceiver or cable is recognized, and whether the port is part of a breakout or shared port group. On the host, confirm the NIC appears in the operating system and check the driver-reported link and module state. The exact commands depend on EOS release and host operating system, so use the command reference for the versions in use rather than applying commands from another model.

Port-group behavior can matter on specific hardware. For example, Arista documents a shared port group on some DCS-7050QX-32S arrangements in which selecting SFP+ or QSFP+ mode affects which interfaces are available. This example applies to that model and arrangement, not to all switches in the 7050 family.
Consider the documented 7 m cable issue only if it matches
Mellanox ConnectX-3 Firmware 2.40.7000 release notes describe a bit error rate (BER) issue involving a 7 m copper SFP+ 10GbE cable connected to an Arista switch. That is a specific historical issue, not a general 7 m failure threshold or proof that it explains another no-link case. If your cable and setup match the note, compare the card’s firmware and cable details with the release notes before treating either device as defective: ConnectX-3 Firmware 2.40.7000 release notes.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check
- The switch does not recognize the cable or module: check its part number and coding against the exact switch model’s compatibility documentation, then reseat or test a known-good supported interconnect.
- The interface is disabled or unavailable: verify the administrative state and, on models with shared port groups, the selected port mode and breakout configuration.
- The interface is enabled but does not link: verify matching port types and supported speed, then test the cable or optics and inspect host driver and NIC link state.
- The link comes up but errors occur: inspect the physical interconnect and compare the setup with the specific 7 m cable issue in the Mellanox release notes if applicable.
If these checks do not isolate the fault, gather the switch model and EOS version, interface status and configuration, NIC SKU and firmware, host driver and operating system, and exact cable or optic details. Those facts are needed to distinguish a port-mode or speed mismatch from unsupported cabling, a host-side issue, or failed hardware.
