A 2026 case report describes a man who developed five melanomas in situ after reporting that he used melanotan peptides alongside tanning-bed sessions. The report documents timing and history. It does not prove that melanotan caused the cancers, and it cannot show how much risk the product carries for anyone else.
What the 2026 case report describes
The paper appeared online on May 12, 2026, in JAAD Case Reports. The authors, Douglas Jaxon Vadner and Sidney Smith, describe a 49-year-old White man with Fitzpatrick skin phototype II who presented with several clinically atypical pigmented lesions.
According to his account, he began tanning-bed sessions in December 2025 and, at the same time, started self-administering melanotan II bought from an online vendor. He later switched to melanotan I. He reported that existing moles darkened quickly. Biopsies identified five primary melanomas in situ arising in preexisting nevi.
Two points about the title matter. First, the report says the product came from an online vendor, not a gym, and the man is described as self-injecting it. Second, nothing in the report chemically confirms what he injected. The product source, dose and purity rest on his own account.

The other exposures in his history
The same history includes exposures that the authors could not separate from the melanotan:
- Intermittent tanning-bed use, beyond the sessions that began in December 2025
- Two earlier sunburns that blistered
- Testosterone use, which he sourced online
Any honest reading of the case has to hold all of these in view. A new melanoma after a period of heavy UV exposure is not unusual on its own, which is why the authors stop short of attributing the cancers to a single exposure.
Why a single case cannot settle causation
The authors state directly that causality cannot be established from one observational case. A case report is a detailed description of one patient. It can flag a pattern worth watching, but it has no comparison group, cannot rule out other causes, and depends on the patient’s own reporting of what he took.

That limit applies to the 2026 paper and to the earlier published case. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s July 7, 2026 warning on melanotan II makes the same point: case reports can signal a safety concern but cannot establish direct causation.
No reliable population-level estimate of melanoma risk from melanotan use has been published in the sources reviewed here. The number of reported cases is not an incidence rate, and it should not be read as one.
What the earlier evidence adds
A 2014 report in Dermatology described a 20-year-old woman who developed melanoma after self-injecting melanotan II, using it to augment sunbed tanning. Its authors described MT-II as unlicensed and incompletely tested, with the extent and types of adverse effects unknown.

Taken together, the two case reports show a consistent pattern: people who use these products outside medical supervision, often alongside UV exposure, and then find melanoma or rapidly changing moles. They do not show how often this happens, how strong the link is, or whether melanotan is the driver.

Regulatory positions are jurisdiction-specific, and the findings below come from different countries and dates.

In short, the TGA’s findings are about Australian enforcement and the products it tested. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s findings are about the U.S. approval status and general safety guidance. Neither says what the product does in a typical user.

What to do if a mole changes
If you have used melanotan, or any unapproved tanning drug, and notice changes in your skin, the Skin Cancer Foundation advises discussing them with a board-certified dermatologist. The steps below are practical, not a diagnosis.
- Photograph any suspicious mole or pigmented patch now, with a ruler beside it, so you can compare later.
- Note what changed and when. Watch for size growth, color variation, uneven borders, bleeding, itching, or a new lesion that appears after tanning sessions.
- Book a full skin examination with a board-certified dermatologist. Tell them exactly what you have injected or applied, the source, the dose, and the dates.
- Bring a list of all tanning-bed sessions and sunburns, including dates and approximate durations, because these affect how the lesions are assessed.
- Stop using the product while you are being evaluated, and ask the clinician whether any further steps are needed.
Do not rely on a home comparison of photos to decide whether a mole is safe. Changes that look minor can still need a biopsy.

People who want a bronzed look without UV exposure have one option that the Skin Cancer Foundation names as a safer cosmetic alternative: sunless self-tanner. It works on the skin’s surface and does not involve UV light or injected substances. It is not a melanoma treatment, does not prevent skin cancer, and does not replace a skin check.

The Foundation’s Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation, put it this way in July 2026: “The desire for a tan should never outweigh concerns about health and safety.”
The product names people search for, including “tanning peptide,” “Melanotan II,” and “MT2,” do not guarantee what is in a given vial. Online labels may be inaccurate, and the TGA warns that consumers cannot be certain of ingredients, strength or quality in products it has not assessed.
